🐰 Bond of the Week! 🐰

These handsome boys all came from Rural King. The adorable polka-dot cutie on the end had one of the most severe eye injuries I’ve ever seen. At the time, he likely only had days to live, but thanks to his amazing mom, he got a second chance.

When she told me where they came from, she seemed a little hesitant. But there should never be any shame in where your bunny came from. What matters is where they are now and how much they are loved. If you’re part of the Dolly’s community, I can almost guarantee your bunny hit the jackpot when they became part of your family. You gave them safety, love, and a future.

I bought my first bunny from a breeder when I was 10 years old, and my second bunny came from Rural King 25 years later. Every rabbit deserves a chance, regardless of where their story began. What truly matters is the happy ending and these boys have certainly found theirs. ❤️🐰🐰🐰

Why does your bun need a friend?

Rabbits are highly social animals, and many thrive when they have a bonded rabbit friend. Having a companion provides comfort, security, and enrichment that humans simply cannot replicate. Bonded rabbits groom each other, snuggle together, play, and communicate in their own unique ways, helping to reduce loneliness and boredom. A rabbit friend can also encourage more activity and confidence, especially in shy or nervous buns. Watching a bonded pair interact is heartwarming.

One of the best parts of having bonded rabbits is that they can enjoy adventures together! Whether they’re heading to a veterinary appointment, going on a road trip, or spending time in a bunny stroller, bonded buns should always stay together whenever possible. Being separated can cause stress and anxiety, and in some cases may even damage their bond. When traveling, bonded rabbits should ride in the same carrier so they can comfort each other and feel secure. Having their trusted companion nearby helps them stay calmer during new experiences and reinforces the special connection they share.

Pictured are Spicy and Lillian enjoying a walk in their new stroller. Both have chronic sniffles and were the perfect match. They bonded immediately. Lillian holds a special place in my heart because she came from horrible conditions, found in a tiny cage after a drug bust. She’s the sweetest bun and I’m so happy Gabe spoils them both every day!

Bonding bunnies can be a delicate process, and having one deaf rabbit can add a few extra challenges along the way. Deaf buns may startle more easily because they can’t hear another rabbit approaching, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or defensive reactions during introductions. They also rely heavily on body language, scent, and routine to feel safe.

These are my personal buns and the lop with the lime green bow is 100% deaf, Bazinga. He loves having bun friends but he also startles easily. So he needed patient and understanding friends that would be kind if he spun around and acted a little defensive.

One of the most important steps in bonding rabbits is making sure they are spayed or neutered before introductions begin. I will not introduce rabbits that are not spayed and nueteted, no exceptions are ever made. Unaltered rabbits are driven by hormones that can lead to territorial behavior, spraying, mounting, fighting, and aggression, making it very difficult and often unsafe to form a lasting bond. Spaying and neutering not only helps reduce these behaviors but also allows rabbits to interact more calmly and focus on building a relationship. After surgery rabbits should be given time to heal, at least 2 weeks. While every rabbit has a unique personality, having both rabbits fixed gives them the best chance at developing a happy, stable, and lifelong friendship.

Reach out if you need help finding a rabbit savvy vet that can spay/neuter your bun!

The Love Story of Ghosty and Golden Ticket

My daughter and I rescued Golden Ticket after spotting him outside, where he had been running the streets for days. He was definitely a bit of a hot mess when we found him! After some TLC, we got him healthy, happy, and adoption-ready, and he soon found the perfect forever home.

A few months later, his family returned looking for a friend for him. We introduced them to Ghosty, and the bond between the two rabbits came together surprisingly easily. However, Ghosty gave her new family a few challenges at first. She began marking her territory and leaving poops outside the litter box.

While this can be frustrating, it’s also very common when a rabbit moves to a new home or forms a new bond. Changes in environment and relationships can make rabbits feel the need to establish their space. Adding extra litter boxes, temporarily limiting free-roam time, and keeping their enclosure smaller can often help reinforce good litter habits. Most importantly, patience goes a long way….sometimes rabbits simply need a little time to adjust to their new surroundings and their new partner.

Today, Ghosty and Golden Ticket are enjoying life together, proving that every great love story is worth a little patience. Their family did an amazing job!

What’s the best way to feed your duos, trios, quads and fluffles? Two words - snuffle mat

Tips-
Get one big enough so there is plenty of room for everyone.
Always make sure all buns come out to eat.
Wash with a bit of vinegar if someone pees on it (they would never).
Can be used for pellets, leafy greens or forage mixes.

Pictured is my fluffle - Roxie, Annie, CoCo, Puff and Ferdinand. They snuffle every day!

Easiest bond of the week award goes to…..
Bu******ks and Tiana now Carlos and Angela. These two were a perfect match! 20 seconds into the speed date, we knew he was the one! Tiana was adopted several months ago and I bonded her to the sweetest little bun, but sadly he passed away. When her family reached out, I immediately thought of Bu******ks. I’m so thankful that Tiana‘s family let her pick her mate ❤️

Finding the perfect match for your bun can take a little time and a lot of speed dates! Just like people, rabbits have their own personalities, preferences, and “must-have” qualities in a partner. Some buns fall in love instantly, while others need to meet a few potential matches before sparks fly. Speed dating gives rabbits a safe, supervised way to interact with different companions and helps us find the best match for a happy, lasting bond!
