Yancey County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scams involving passport services. Fraudulent websites and social media pages are advertising expedited processing, appointment scheduling, or renewal assistance for excessive fees while collecting personal and financial information.
Residents are reminded that passport applications and renewals should only be completed through the official U.S. Department of State website (travel.state.gov) or through authorized passport acceptance facilities such as the United States Postal Service (USPS).
🔒 To protect yourself:

Use only official “.gov” websites.

Be cautious of third-party services promising “urgent” or “guaranteed” results.

Do not provide personal information or payment through unusual methods.

As dangerous cold and winter weather move in, don’t forget about your pets. They rely on you to stay safe and warm.

Bring pets indoors, limit time outside, and make sure they have food, unfrozen water, and a warm, draft-free place to rest. Watch closely for signs of cold stress like shivering, lethargy, or lifting paws.

🐶🐱 Check on neighbors’ pets when it’s safe to do so. A little extra care during the storm can save a life.
