Bakers Acres K9 Academy

Bakers Acres K9 Academy In-home dog training for you, your family, and your dog for life, guaranteed! Serving Utah County and beyond Because, guess what! Not with us!

You’re probably here because either you or someone you know needs help with their noisy, fearful, obnoxious, messy, unruly, anxious, destructive, or even aggressive dog. Imagine if you could “fix” all of these problems in as little as 3 lessons, but had the peace of mind knowing you have training assistance for the rest of your dog’s life? We approach training your dog by not actually training you

r dog, but by teaching YOU how to train your dog. Your dog lives with you, in your home. WE'RE NOT THE DOG WHISPERERS...YOU ARE!

A good reminder to our clients or anyone who is in the process of of dog training!

In all interactions with your dog, you have three choices on how to react:
1. Reward - reward or praise the desirable behaviors you want to see continue
2. Ignore - ignore or manage what you can tolerate, or behaviors that you will allow on occasion
3. Punish - punish and provide consequences for things that are unacceptable. This includes behaviors that are dangerous to either humans or dogs

There are general behaviors that tend to get universal reactions across dog owners (rewarding good recall, punishing excessive barking, etc). However, there are some behaviors that are simply up to you! Maybe you love cuddling with your dog on the couch and don't mind it. Others may have a hard rule against dogs on furniture. Some may ignore the occasional growl or "woof" when someone is at the door, others may encourage their dog alerting to strangers coming up the driveway.

The key is to be consistent and fair. If you want to see a behavior continue, reward it! If you don't mind a behavior, then ignore or manage it to keep it tolerable. If you want to eliminate something unacceptable- provide consequences or punishment right away. You do not want to confuse your dog by constantly responding to a behavior differently each time.

Freeze dried liver!!

If you are looking for a safe & healthy treat to start giving to your pups, try Freeze Dried Liver Treats! (Available for a great price at Costco!) Not only are they grain free, but the only ingredient is Beef Liver! No added sugars or anything that isn't safe for our dogs, which can be the case for some treats. Some treats may have additional ingredients like grains, vegetables, or other proteins, so it's essential to check the product label for anything you don’t want your dog to have.

Beef liver training treats for dogs are our favorite for many reasons. First off, they’re just so delicious–ask our dogs, they’ll tell you! Beyond that, they’re incredibly nutritious. Liver is a nutrient-dense source of protein, providing our dogs with essential amino acids they need to build and maintain muscle density and a healthy heart. Beef liver also has large amounts of iron and Vitamin A, both of which contribute to overall health and wellness in dogs.

Now, just like everything for dogs, excessive consumption can lead to dietary imbalances, potentially resulting in health problems for dogs, so be smart about how many treats you give your dog a day, and try to mix it up! Your dog will love the variety, even if they prefer one treat over the other. Also, watch for potential allergens in any treat you give your dog.

All that being said, we believe at Bakers Acres K9 Academy that these beef liver treats are some of the best you can buy! Liver treats are tasty, healthy, and loved by many, many dogs. If you have any questions about what treats are best for your furry pet, get in contact with us! We are active on social media, can take calls on the phone, and respond to emails!

Happy training!

We have our first 🐾pack walk🐾 this upcoming Saturday morning at 9am, so this is a good time to bring out some winter safety tips for dogs!

❓How do we prepare for walks in the winter❓

The first thing to consider is knowing what kind of cold tolerance your dog’s breed has. This information is easy to look up, but make sure that you use credible sources such as the American Kennel Club for information. A Husky or Saint Bernard are going to have certain adaptations (double coat, circulatory system that reduces heat loss, etc ) that make them more cold hardy and they probably do not need much intervention during winter. If you have a dog with a single, short haired coat that isn’t adapted for cold weather - think French Bulldog or Whippet - they may benefit from an extra layer like a dog sweater.

Generally, smaller dogs and elderly dogs are less cold tolerant and produce less body heat - so you may want to consider shorter walks or taking your dog to an indoor space for a walk (Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, Barnes n Nobles, etc). Just be sure to give them a chance to relieve themselves beforehand.

Does your skin tend to get more dry in the winter? Guess what, dogs too! Some great ways to combat this is to apply a safe, paw balm on your dogs pads to prevent cracking and provide some relief from the cold or snow. We recommend Musher’s Secret! (This is also a great resource for an active, hiking dog). It is also a good idea to wipe your dog’s pads down when you get back from a walk to get off any salt that has been used to melt sidewalks or roads. Try to keep baths at a minimum, since frequent baths can contribute to dry skin.

Finally, just use common sense! If you are outside and absolutely freezing, and your dog does not look like they are having a good time.. It’s probably time to go back inside. If you have a dog who can’t get enough of the snow, make sure you have a dry and warm place for them to come back to when playtime is over so they can rest and get back some of that body heat. If you happen to have a dog that spends the majority of their time outside, consider feeding them a little extra to make up for the burned calories trying to stay warm. Signs of a cold dog are shivering, tucking their tail or curling their bodies up, whining or appearing anxious/uncomfortable.

Stay warm and stay safe, hope to see you all there Saturday morning!!

FREE Pack Walks are starting up again on Saturday, February 1st, and will be held every 1st Saturday of the month. We would love to see all of our "pack walk friends" in a few weeks!

This is a great opportunity to get your dog socialized in a safe environment and with the guidance of a professional dog trainer.

MEETING SPOT
Please park in the East Parking Lot at the Nebo Summit Center (165 S 700 E, Springville). We will meet at the southeast corner of the parking lot under the big tree.

RSVP
As always, please RSVP: https://calendly.com/bakersacres/pack-walk. And share the link with your friends and neighbors. This service is free and open to the public. All we ask is they obey the following rules.

GUIDELINES
Please plan ahead. No more than 1 dog per person over 18 years of age is permitted. Friends and children are welcome, however, if they are handling a dog, they must have permission from the trainer.

During the walk, your dog must be wearing a secure, fitted, buckle collar and a regular 6’ leash or slip lead and any other training equipment recommended by your trainer.

These walks are interactive and require your undivided attention. Please stay focused on your dog and those around you and put your phone on silent.

Children and dogs of various sizes, ages, and training levels will be present. If your dog has issues with either, please understand that you are completely responsible for your dog. If you or your dog are not ready for such an environment, we recommend starting with private lessons before attending pack walks or group classes.

Before you leave your vehicle, please check your dog's collar and leash to ensure everything is secure and maintain a firm grip on your dog's leash at all times.

Take a moment to look around. If others are arriving at the same time, please be respectful and maintain a good distance, (at least 10’ apart from each other). This is crucial as some attendees are fearful and even aggressive in manner and we want to prevent any mishaps.

When the walk is over, please clean up after yourself and your dog and help cleanup anything that doesn't belong.

See you February 1st!
