Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center

Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center TJO provides animal control services for Springfield, Holyoke, and Chicopee Massachusetts. We respond to 3,000-4,000 animal-related calls annually.

Our staff and facility provide animal control services to three area cities -- Springfield, Chicopee and Holyoke. We are one of the largest regional animal control programs in the state. It is our goal to make this region a model for other animal control services. We provide temporary housing for over 4,000 stray and abandoned animals each year. We also provide 10-day rabies quarantine housing for

unvaccinated animals that have bitten either humans or other domestic animals. Our primary service is that of public health and safety. We are well-versed in rabies and zoonotic disease issues for the safety of our citizens. We respond to animal-related calls 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Each TJO animal control officer is certified by the state of Massachusetts. All stray dogs are mandated by Massachusetts state law to be held for 7 days. In Massachusetts, there is no required holding period for cats. If unclaimed, animals are evaluated for both health and temperament prior to being made available for adoption. Dogs are evaluated more thoroughly for temperament to help ensure they will be safe, enjoyable companions. The facility has an in-house veterinarian four days per week, responsible for shelter animal wellness and sterilization surgery. We do not have veterinary services available to the public.

We are excited to let you all know Wanda was adopted today!

Wanda came in to our care when she was hit by a car in early October. Some of our young Good Samaritan’s got her the help she needed. Through your financial support we were able to treat her injuries. Wanda was loved and cared for in one of our wonderful foster homes prior to adoption. Wanda’s adopter came in just for her!

Update: This pup, dubbed Raven, is still not out of the woods, but he did have enough energy to lift his head and eat on his own. We don't know when he will be coming back to us from the ER, but they are doing everything they can for him. If you would like to contribute to his medical care, please follow the link: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/ForHMZsVNbwJOxllwfx0nw

We are continuing to run down leads on how this dog came to be in this condition. We are still hoping to find camera footage from the area of Cherrelyn Street that might show him in the area at any point in the recent past. If you think you might have some, please contact us so we can add it to our investigation.

Good evening. This male dog was found in a yard on Cherrelyn Street in Springfield. He is currently at the ER receiving treatment with a guarded prognosis. We're hoping someone might recognize him or have video of him in the area to help determine what happened to him. If anyone has any information, please contact us at 413-781-1484 x1.

This year, 1,814 animals found their way to the Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center. The vet team performed 699 surgical procedures, and our incredible animal control officers responded to 4,341 calls for help and assistance. Without a vet in 2025, many other surgeries and procedures were performed at other facilities which the Foundation funded. During this holiday season we ask you to consider a donation to the Foundation for TJO Animals.

Your support enables the Foundation to fund:
• Life-saving surgeries and diagnostics
• Equip the clinic with vital medical supplies
• Deliver top-quality care for every furry friend
• Create enriching spaces for comfort and healing

This beautiful girl, who we named Piglet, came in Tuesday night in critical condition. She has remained in the care of the Emergency Hospital since then, fighting for her life. Her stay there and the treatments she is receiving are chipping away at our medical fund, but we're dedicated to providing her every opportunity to recover.

Today we are discussing starting advanced treatment options, including a blood transfusion, to help her heal. We're also working with Springfield Police Department to investigate what led to her poor condition. Please keep Piglet in your thoughts while we navigate her medical crisis.

If you would like to contribute to her care costs, please consider doing so with the link below. As always, thank you all for all your support!
