This sweet pup, Ronan, was recently hospitalized with Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS) — a scary condition that can make dogs very sick, very quickly. Thanks to quick care and lots of TLC from his nurse, Ronan was feeling better in no time!

At one point, his nurse flipped his ears back during treatments… and suddenly we had the cutest mouse in the hospital. 🐶➡️🐭 We’re happy to report that Ronan’s ears (and his tummy) are both back to normal now!

We’re so proud of this brave boy for making a speedy recovery and keeping us all smiling along the way. 💕

Meet Fannie Mae and her nurse, Itzamar! 💜

Sweet Fannie Mae has been spending some time with us in the hospital as we help manage her chronic kidney disease. Despite feeling under the weather, she’s still charming everyone — and especially loves a tasty treat break during her care!

Chronic kidney disease is common in pets, especially as they get older. With early detection, careful monitoring, and supportive treatment, many pets can continue to enjoy happy, loving lives.

We’re so proud of Fannie Mae for being such a brave girl and grateful to our amazing team, like Itzamar, who show every patient the same love they’d give their own pets. 💕

Heart officially stolen 💘 Just look at that face!

This precious face belongs to Hongsi, a tough little Boston Terrier who came to AESC for post-op monitoring after undergoing a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery).

Despite everything she’s been through, Hongsi has been the picture of resilience—resting on her cozy blankets and winning over our entire ICU team with that expressive face and side-eye sass.

Our job? Making sure her recovery was as smooth and safe as possible with:
💧 IV fluids and medications
🩺 Constant monitoring of vitals
🍽️ A gentle reintroduction to food
💛 And LOTS of snuggles and support

We’re so proud of how far she’s come and honored to care for her during this important part of her healing journey.

🦟 Heartworm Cases Are on the Rise – and Arkansas is No Exception! 🐾

According to CAPCvet.org, 1 in 30 dogs in Arkansas is testing positive for heartworms. That’s over 3,000 dogs—and counting. These parasites are transmitted by mosquitoes, which are active year-round in the South. All it takes is one bite.

💔 If left untreated, heartworm disease can cause:
• Caval syndrome – a life-threatening blockage of blood flow caused by masses of worms in the heart
• Lung disease, heart failure, and multi-organ damage
• Extreme fatigue, coughing, and exercise intolerance
• Painful, risky, and costly treatment that often requires hospitalization and months of strict cage rest

💵 Did you know?
The average cost to treat heartworm disease ranges from $1,200–$2,000 — and can reach $6,000 or more in severe cases.
By contrast, preventatives cost as little as $5–15/month.

🩺 That’s a 10× savings, not to mention the pain and stress it spares your pet.

✅ The good news?
Heartworm disease is 100% preventable with monthly medication. Chews, topicals, and injectables are all available — your primary vet can help choose what’s right for your pet.

👉 While AESC does not carry prevention products, we strongly encourage you to follow up with your family veterinarian to protect your pet year-round.

📍Swipe to see how Arkansas compares to the rest of the country — and why the South is a hot zone for heartworm cases.

Meet Casper — a sweet and stoic feline who spent three days in our hospital battling a serious condition called DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis).

DKA is a life-threatening complication of diabetes that occurs when the body can’t use glucose properly and starts breaking down fat for energy instead, causing dangerous acid buildup in the bloodstream.

When Casper came to us, he was lethargic, not eating, and extremely dehydrated. Our team immediately got to work with:

💉 IV insulin therapy – to carefully regulate blood glucose
💧 Fluid therapy – to correct dehydration and electrolyte imbalances
🧪 Frequent bloodwork monitoring – to guide every step of his treatment
❤️ Around-the-clock nursing care – and plenty of purrs and patience

After three days of intensive care and a LOT of love, Casper turned a huge corner. He’s now home, continuing his journey with a solid plan and a team cheering him on from afar. 👏

Chronic conditions like diabetes can be scary—but with early diagnosis, proper management, and quick action during emergencies, pets like Casper can live long and happy lives.

🐾 Happy International Cat Day! 🐾
Today we honor the purrs, head boops, and playful antics that make our feline friends so special. 🐱💛

But being a cat parent also means being prepared. Cats are experts at hiding illness, so it’s important to know the signs of trouble.
Common feline emergencies we see at AESC include:
🚨 Urinary blockages (straining to urinate or not urinating at all)
🚨 Ingesting toxic plants, medications, or household items
🚨 Severe vomiting or diarrhea
🚨 Difficulty breathing
🚨 Trauma from falls, fights, or accidents

If you ever notice these signs – don’t wait. Cats can decline quickly, and early treatment can make all the difference.

This is Joy, and the name couldn’t be more fitting 💛

She was hospitalized at AESC after ingesting bromethalin, a highly toxic rodenticide. It’s a scary and often life-threatening situation—but thanks to fast action and the expert care of her nurse Tiffany, Joy had the best fighting chance.

Tiffany was there through it all—administering Toxiban to help bind the toxin, providing IV fluids to flush her system, and monitoring for neurological signs around the clock. Most importantly, she gave Joy comfort and compassion when she needed it most.

Now? That worried face has turned back into one full of Joy — and we couldn’t be more proud of both her and the team that stood beside her. 💕

🛑 Reminder: Rodenticide exposure is an emergency. If your pet may have ingested any toxin, call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital immediately.

📅 August is National Immunization Awareness Month! 🐶🐱💉

While AESC doesn’t provide vaccines, we see firsthand the devastating consequences of preventable diseases — and that’s why we’re passionate about educating pet parents on the importance of vaccinations.

In Arkansas, core vaccines are essential for protecting your pets from life-threatening illnesses:

✅ Dogs
• Rabies – Required by law, fatal if left untreated
• Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus (DAPP) – Protects against highly contagious and often deadly viruses
• Leptospirosis (optional but common in Arkansas) – Spread through water or soil contaminated by wildlife urine

✅ Cats
• Rabies – Required and crucial for all cats
• Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia (FVRCP) – Core protection against respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses
• Feline Leukemia (FeLV) – Especially important for kittens and outdoor cats

🍼 Puppies & Kittens require a series of vaccines starting at 6–8 weeks, followed by boosters into adulthood. Staying on schedule helps build long-lasting immunity!

🩺 Talk to your family vet about your pet’s vaccine schedule and make sure they’re protected for life. Prevention is always better than treatment — and we’re here when the unexpected happens.

🐾🎉 Happy National Mutt Day from the perfectly imperfect pups of AESC!
Today we’re celebrating the lovable, one-of-a-kind, mixed-bag-of-DNA mutts that keep us laughing, running, and occasionally wondering “what even ARE you?” 🤔💕

See some of the mutts owned (or maybe owned by) our staff — part dog, part mystery, all heart. 🐶❤️

Whether they’re 30% lab, 10% gremlin, and 60% pure chaos… we love them just the way they are.

Drop a pic of your mutt in the comments and tell us their weirdest trait! 👇👇
