Things only barn cats believe, a complete list.

The hay loft is theirs by deed, signed and notarized.
The dog is a guest. A guest who never left, but still a guest.
The feed sack you opened is for them, regardless of what the label says.
You exist to refill the water dish and open the back door.
Tuna falls from the sky as a reward for excellent mousing.
Your lap is a nap stop, not a commitment.
The kitchen counter is theirs, the porch railing is theirs, the top of the truck is theirs.

If a barn cat has chosen your place, you do not own the cat. The cat owns you, the barn, and the surrounding three acres.

We stock food for every kind of barn cat, the picky ones, the friendly ones, the ones who only come around at dusk. Stop in at Ranch Feed and Pet Supply.

Tell us about your barn cat. Bonus points for the cat's name.

Summer hoof care is the difference between a sound horse in August and a vet bill.

By June, the ground is hard, the dust is up, and the average hoof is taking a beating. Here is what we tell customers when they come in worried about their horse's feet.

Pick out hooves daily. The boring habit catches everything early. You are watching for stones wedged in the frog, hot spots on the sole, sour smells from thrush, and any brown soft area on the sole.

The abscess pattern this time of year.
Your horse is fine in the morning and three-legged lame by afternoon. The hoof feels warm. There is a throbbing pulse above the fetlock you have not felt before. Likely an abscess working its way to the surface. Soak in warm Epsom salt water, wrap with a poultice, and call your farrier or vet if it does not break by day three.

A few summer hoof rules.
Skip the daily hose down. The wet then dry then wet cycle ruins a hoof faster than dry alone. A weekly conditioner does more for moisture balance.
Trim cycle stays at 6 to 8 weeks. Letting it stretch in summer is how chips and flares start.
Cracks need attention before they reach the white line. Small now is cheap. Big later is a problem.
If your horse is barefoot and the ground is brutal, sole protectants and hoof boots are worth the money.

We stock hoof picks, conditioners, Epsom salts, poultice, abscess wraps, and sole protectants at Ranch Feed and Pet Supply. If you are not sure what your horse needs, bring a photo of the hoof and we will help you sort it out.

Hot pavement test, before you take the dog for a walk.

Press the back of your hand to the asphalt and count to seven. If your hand pulls back, the pavement is too hot for your dog's paws.

By June, our parking lot hits 125 degrees by mid-morning, which is the burn threshold for dog pads. Burns blister, peel, and take weeks to heal. Some dogs hide the pain until you see them limp two days later.

The easy fixes are the same ones our customers swear by.

Walk early, before 8am or after sundown when the asphalt has cooled.
Stick to grass and dirt paths instead of the road shoulder.
Bring water along, a quick paw rinse on a long walk cools them off.
Use boots for senior dogs, short-legged breeds, and any dog who has to cross a parking lot in midday.

We stock paw balm, dog boots in every size, and cooling mats at Ranch Feed and Pet Supply. If you are not sure what size boot fits your dog, bring them in and we will measure.

How do you keep your dog cool on summer walks?
