🐝 Do You Know the Difference Between a Bee Swarm and a Beehive?

Knowing the difference can help save thousands of honey bees—and keep you safe.

A swarm has just left its old hive and is looking for a new home. It can look like thousands of bees flying through the air.

📸 Photo 2 – Bees Clustered Together
Once the swarm lands, the bees gather into a tight cluster—often on a tree branch, fence, bush, mailbox, or even the ground. They may stay there for a few hours or a couple of days while scout bees search for a permanent home.

📸 Photo 3 – A Beehive
This is an established colony. The bees have chosen a home and started building honeycomb. Hives are commonly found:
🏠 Under roof eaves or awnings
🧱 Inside walls
🔥 Under BBQ grills
🪵 Inside sheds, trees, utility boxes, or any protected empty space

One of the biggest signs of a hive is steady bee traffic—you’ll notice bees continuously flying in and out of the same entrance all day long.

🐝 If you think you’ve found a swarm or a beehive, don’t spray them. Honey bees are vital pollinators, and in many cases they can be safely rescued and relocated instead of exterminated.
