The HERO Hounds want to wish you a Happy & SAFE 4th of July Weekend! 🇺🇸🐾🙏

Remember: Fireworks 🎆 are scary for many animals, here are tips to keep your pups safe:

- Take pups out early if you can for long walks or play outside during the day, so they can be inside tired, safe & secure when the loudest parts of the night commence

- make a safe place inside your home with calming firework noise canceling music (try dog channels as a good distraction or we love Avatar & Jurassic Park series at the HERO House)

- Make sure they have proper identification on them in case they manage to get away from your home so they can get home quickly

Good News: Vet is 90% sure Sammy’s horrible X-rays & bloodwork are all related to heartworms & not cancer 🙌🐾💙

Bad News: Sammy’s heartworm load is extremely heavy, too heavy to neuter. We also need to be careful during treatment to avoid complications as the worms die.

If the heartworms die too fast, especially in an older dogs like Sammy, they can block blood flow leading to many life threatening conditions or even death.

Please keep your pups on heartworm prevention & be an advocate of heartworm prevention. 🙏

Sammy, formerly Chrom, is in the HERO House tonight in prep for his neuter tomorrow 🙏🐾💙

Sammy has quite the cough, is heartworm positive & his shelter x-rays had the vets in Louisiana thinking he may have cancer & recommended euthanasia.

Tomorrow will be a big day for Sammy, but even if it is cancer, tommorrow won’t be Sammy’s last day. We know he has plenty of good days left, we just need to make sure he is comfortable for all those days.

Something to celebrate this Saturday: Sweet Maxie is feeling much better with the right mix of medicine & foster love! 🥰🐾🙏

While Maxie’s cancer cannot be cured, thanks to her incredible vets, her swelling is down and she is back to enjoying her life with her furever foster mama, papa & fur siblings.

Maxie continues to enjoys hikes & walks with her furever siblings, cuddles with her foster mama, and even went on her first family road trip!

While we wish we could have gotten Maxie sooner to remove her cancer before it. Old have metastasized, HERO feels blessed to have fosters like Dani & Blake who can give Maxie the dream life for the rest of her days. 🥰

Houston, we have a problem 😳🐾🥴

Murphy is getting posted on petfinder in about a minute! 😅 This boy is about perfect, amazing with other dogs (he would do best in a home with a very active playmate), does not care about cats, LOVES kids big & small, is a gem in his crate when we are gone & at night…his biggest issue…he climbs fences! 😵‍💫

Not only does he climb to get out of ours, he climbs into our neighbors fences to play with their pups. With the heat this has not been a bad combo as no dogs are out, but I know not every dog is friendly and this could be a bad combo.

Murphy does need a home that will ensure he goes outside to potty after meals as he is a little afraid of grass, especially wet grass after his feet issues, but if walked in the morning, after meals and at night, we go without issue. This boy is seriously amazing as long as you have a 6 ft fence or are committed to walking him for regular exercise.

The world of rescue never stops & so we have 2 new HERO pups pulled from euthanasia from an East Tennessee shelter. 🙏🐾💙🩷

Everyone meet Benjamin & Blanche! Benny is a handsome 2 year old, 40lb red tick mix. He seems to have lived in a house previously as he jumped on the couch and bed immediately. He’s had no problem making himself at home and even got on the bathroom vanity so he could see himself in the mirror 😂. Benny loves toys, does well in his crate and even appears to be house trained. He is heartworm negative and already vetted so hes ready for adoption! 😍

Blanche is a sweet, senior beagle mix, 7-8 yrs old & maybe 35lbs. It took a little convincing to get her inside, but she’s acclimating well. She’s claimed her foster sister Lillie’s crate as her own, hasn’t had any accidents and carries around toy. She’s a crazy good jumper in spite of her age and jumps from the retaining wall to the hot tub 🥴. Blanche still needs to be vetted then will be ready for adoption.

Sweet Mabel crossed the rainbow bridge in the loving arms of her mom Kim at NE Ohio Greyhound Rescue, Inc. 🌈🐾💕

We were so blessed to be part of her journey & so thankful for the years of love and care she received at the sanctuary. Run free sweet girl!

Life smacked you at every turn, sweet Mabel, but your tail never stopped wagging and you never turned down a chance to snuggle with your human caretakers. Through extreme neglect, heartworm treatments, surgeries for ghastly hernias and rotting teeth and aggressive cancer which consumed your little body with lightening speed, you never complained, never turned down a treat or a meal and never refused to be the sweetest little beagle ever. You taught us to persevere, to savor the moment and to continue our work with the sickest and oldest animals in need.
Thank you, Mabel, for being part of our lives. And, thank you, HERO Hound Rescue for pulling Mabel from the shelter and getting her ready to travel. Thank you to the volunteer drivers that helped Mabel make her way from TN to OH. Thank you to all the kind people that donated toward her medical bills over the years. You were all a part of her life.

Watching a senior rescue pup get the zoomies for the first time is always an amazing feeling. Just knowing they finally feel safe enough to play & let their true nature show, for possibly the first time in their entire lives, is an event to celebrate! 🎉 🐾🥰

For $5 Friday, we are hoping to raise some money to help cover Henry & Sammy’s Heartworm Treatments! 🙏🐾💙💪

Due to their advanced stages of heartworm, both Henry & Sammy (formerly Chrom) are currently starting on slow-kill treatment to reduce the risk of side effects. Slow-kill treatment is roughly $275 per boy. If they are deemed healthy enough for fast kill, the price increases to about $400-$450.

Please help us, help these adorable & much deserving Louisiana boys who are now proud HERO Hounds! 👑🐾🥰
