Does your dog like to destroy and destuff their toys? LET THEM!

Taking apart prey (toys) is an essential part of dog behavior. It's good for your dog's mental and behavioral health to do this!

It's also a great way to bond with your dog to take part in the dismantling by playing tug and keep away. However, make sure your dog understands that you are also playing and not trying to take the toy away forever.

Need to tire out your dog during this heat wave? Teach them something new! Last night I taught Blue the goldendoodle how to use a scratchboard to file his own nails. He got really into it, as you can see!

When I petsit shy and fearful dogs, my strategy is to pretend not to exist (so to speak) and to avoid interactions with the dog in order to promote their comfort in their own home. These and other ethical methods were taught to me through the certification program for professional petsitters.

It's kind of hard to do all this when the dog I'm trying to leave alone follows me to the bedroom and hops on the bed to sniff my feet!! 🤣

In this video I'm playing the engagement game "Find It" with Lulu with Itty-bitty kibbles. I often play this game with reactive dogs (they have Big Feelings™️ about other dogs, people, bikes, etc) so that I can easily distract them from upsetting things we may encounter on our walks.

But to be able to do that outside, where all the different sights, sounds, and smells are, I have to make dogs understand what "Find It!" means. It's easier to teach this inside a familiar (boring) space first and then progress to to a boring outside space.

Believe it or not, sometimes I have to teach dogs that there's even something tasty on the ground to look for!

As a pet care professional, I have encountered plenty of descriptive cat names: Pumpkin, Oreo, Snowball etc.

But this little lady is named Big Head and I think she's the most accurately named cat I've ever seen.
