Last Friday I interacted with a total of 14 dogs... And Miss Lulu spent about 10 minutes doing a major sniff-spection of my clothing to learn just who I am meeting when I'm not with her!

Headlamps are so useful for taking pictures of dark-colored dogs, especially at night! I rarely get to showcase the beauty of one of my weekly walkers, Miss Lulu the Great Dane's.

Sometimes when dogs get to play-tussling, things may look like they've taken a bad turn. That's why it's important to know dog body language, pay attention to your dogs' signals during play, and be prepared if things get too rough.

It gets dark so early in Middle Tennessee these days! When dusk looms over a winter afternoon, I bring out my reflective vest and headlamp for walks!

I have for sure garnered some chuckles from neighbors who think my safety protocols are over-the-top, but I will never compromise my clients' pets' safety for the sake of not looking like a dork.

Over the past year in Spring Hill, where I live and perform services for clients, there have been numerous incidents where cars have hit pedestrians and bicyclists. One teenager died when a bus ran over him! It's very important to me that I don't add to the pedestrian casualty statistics.

When walks aren't an option during visits, I will always offer an enrichment activity of one kind or another. For Fitz and Willow on this day, it's a sniffing-foraging game involving cones and some tasty treats like freeze-dried fish and liver.

Both dogs are high-drive, high-energy breeds that crave purpose and "jobs". That's why their human hired me to make sure her dogs get ample activity and stimulation while she's away.

Sniffing and foraging uses a lot of canine brain power!

There are many habits that I think dog owners could benefit from adopting from professional dog walkers. One habit is the use of a headlamp and wearing reflective clothing at night during walks.

Not only is it easier to spot a dog's poo, using a headlamp, it's useful for scanning your surroundings for wild animals or loose dogs in the neighborhood, thanks to reflective "eye shine".

Wearing visibility gear for dog walking helps not only yourself and your dog remain safe on roadways and sidewalks , but also allows other pedestrians and their dogs avoid you. I'm a reactive dog owner and I walk lots of reactive dogs. During the day it's easy for me to give people and their dogs a wide berth.

However, once night falls, my efforts to reinforce calm walking skills with client reactive dogs are stymied when I can't anticipate approaching triggers like a neighbor in dark clothing and a dark-coated dog with a non-reflective leash.

Miss Lulu the Great Dane didn't have a puppyhood that promoted socialization, ie normalizing different noises, people, sights, and scents. As a result, she's nearly 3 years old, 100lbs, and spooks at the sight of a baby highchair on a patio and is scared by the sound of a measuring tape reeling in.

Today, I discovered that she was fearful of the sound of ice cubes rattling in my steel water bottle. However, because she's come to trust me as someone who takes her feelings seriously, she knows that I don't usually handle scary things if they're actually harmful.

To help Lulu understand what was making the noise and thus reduce how scary it is, I unscrewed the cap and poured an ice cube into my hand. Lulu LOVES ice cubes. She gently took the ice from my hand, retreated to chew it up, and came back for more.

This time, I gently shook the bottle, resulting in more ice rattling. Lulu looked hesitant, but still came up to accept another ice cube from me. I repeated it a few more times, until Lulu was able to be right next to my hand as I rattled the bottle. Instead of having her ears back and raising a paw in her uncertainty as she before, Lulu kept her ears in a neutral position and was very brave about touching her muzzle to the bottle.

It's important to always acknowledge and accept a dog's fear, lest you accidentally make it worse. Gradually helping a dog to understand and investigate a new, strange object is a great way to help them reduce their fear and engage their curiosity.

⭐ However, if you don't have experience doing this, please consult a dog behavior expert about how to gently desensitize without emotionally flooding your dog and provoking them to shut down. There's a right way and a wrong way.
