When a human is in pain, he or she can call a doctor—but an animal cannot. That’s why it’s important for pet owners to watch for signs that their beloved companion is in pain.

Pain has as many manifestations as there are acute injuries, chronic conditions, and individual diseases. Pain experts define pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage.”

Pain is very subjective and difficult to measure. Because dogs instinctively hide their pain to prevent potential predators from targeting them when they are injured, pain assessment in dogs can be challenging. The outward demonstrations of pain vary widely from dog to dog. It is important to recognize that just because a dog does not cry, limp, or show other obvious signs of pain, that does not mean it is not in pain.

People often call heartworm disease the “silent killer” because early symptoms can be mild or unnoticed. The disease may have already caused severe damage by the time symptoms appear. Here is what to watch for:

Dogs:

Persistent cough
Fatigue after moderate activity
Decreased appetite
Weight loss
Advanced cases may cause heart failure and abdominal swelling due to fluid buildup.

Cats:

Coughing or asthma-like attacks
Vomiting
Loss of appetite or weight loss
Severe cases may lead to difficulty walking, fainting, seizures, or sudden collapse.

Make sure your pet is protected year-round.

Chip Your Pet Month is celebrated in May annually. Each year, about 10 million pets are lost in America, with millions ending up in animal shelters. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats in these shelters without microchips are reunited with their owners. The goal of Chip Your Pet Month is to encourage pet owners to microchip their animals so that they can be quickly found and brought back to their owners if they go missing. The microchips are placed beneath the pet’s skin, typically between the shoulders. Veterinary offices or animal shelters can use the contact information on these implants and get in touch with you in case you lose your pets.

"They’ve been helpful with two of my cats one needing its tail removed due to it being broken and another for nasal polyps. I will never go to another vet. They are great. I just hope I don’t have to take any of my other cats there anytime soon for major surgeries lol" - Colleen, Google Review
