I’m not usually one to post controversial issues but today I am going to stand up for MY HOME and OUR COMMUNITY.

Please read this post in its entirety and if you feel called to do so please sign the petition. You DO NOT have to be a resident to sign.

Here is the link to the petition AGAINST putting a skii resort in the beautiful, wild and rugged Ruby Mountains. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/ruby-mountain-re-zoning-could-allow-for-commercial?

These are my thoughts on the matter and if you have different thoughts I respect those but will strongly disagree that this will be a good thing for our community.

📣A call to action
Public lands are dwindling with open space zoning declining rapidly at a rate of 6,000 acres a day. That amounts to roughly 2 million acres a year.

Our community is now threatened to become another statistic with the zoning request of 3,197 acres to change from open zoning to agricultural-residential zoning. Worse is that 2,296 of these acres are nestled IN the beautiful Ruby mountains which is the backyard of the Spring Creek, Lamoille and Elko community.

These are our wildly rugged beautiful mountains that called us to live here. These mountains persuaded us to put roots down, raise our children, and work to help our neighbors. The rubies are my home. They are special to so many and have been threatened countless times by people trying to change them. The thing that makes them so special is the rugged beauty of open space. I call for you to fight for our community. To fight for the rubies. To fight for our way of life, our western culture, and our neighbors who will be directly affected by a zoning change.

I strongly oppose this for so many reasons including wildlife displacement, water, soil quality, taxes, noise, excessive lights, traffic, roads, and a completely inadequate healthcare infrastructure in this community to handle an influx of people.

We are a family that skis and snowboards. However I do not want it in my backyard (see photo below of proposed land).

In addition to my concerns we should all be concerned by the fact that according to the California Businessman that now owns this land , this terrain “ skews expert and rugged... there's a ton of cliffs, there's a ton of very steep terrain".

This location will not stay a small resort if the only runs are “expert level”. With the exception of few people in this area that can ski these types of runs, most people here will be beginners and families. We are a family oriented community and should be very worried what our future holds with this development.

Preserve the Rubies. Preserve our water, our roads, our safety and our community.

Sincerely,
-A Spring Creek homeowner on the list of 30 closest residents
-A Spring Creek small Business owner
-A Flight Nurse serving our community
-A mother raising her children in this community

I don’t know who needs to hear this today but I feel the need to say it.

HORSEMANSHIP IS A JOURNEY.

No matter your background, discipline, and experience level you will have good days and bad days. You will feel on top of the world and down in trenches.

The bottom line is you are where you are with your horse and that’s okay. Keep moving forward and keep looking back at where you started.

It’s easy to feel discouraged when you see others achieving goals you have yet to achieve. BUT remember comparison is the thief of joy. Remember the only way to get where you want to be is to keep moving forward, backwards, left and right.

Embrace your journey and fall in love with the process 💫

Bess & Wyatt ✨
This one is close to my heart. I was once told that this little mare was “unridable”.
When Bess and I met she was a broodmare. She was as wild as domesticated horses come. I recall during branding she actually jumped over the stocks. She was not even halterbroke.
I met Bess during a summer out in the pasture. I spent everyday with Bess and a band of 30 broodmares, a beautiful stud and their foals. Every single one by the end of the summer was in my pocket. Every one except for Bess.
Fast forward to 6 years later and Meet Bess a 13 yr old mare with a heart of gold. This picture says a lot but to me I see my 5 year old son and an old trusty mare named Bess.

Check out Miss Sunshine trailer loading💫

Thoughts about trailering:
Trailering can be tricky at best and downright dangerous most of the time especially when working with a reactive horse.

Imagine trailering from a horses perspective, you are asking a prey animal to willingly step into a metal box meant to trap them. That metal box creaks and moves with each step. Once they step into trailer jail you tie them up and make them stand still. Then you proceed to lock them in the jail cell and close the slats and trailer door. They are then expected to not act like a prey animal and instead stand quietly and let you drive them down the road at highway speeds. Meanwhile everything is moving and they have to focus on their feet and keep their balance without falling down during any hard braking or sharp turns. During that drive they are exposed to every sound of the human world. Some include the road noise, traffic, construction, motorcycles, bicyclists, pedestrians, and speed bumps. After all that is said and done you unload them from the trailer into an unknown area that is usually completely out of your control and usually full of people, sounds, and other animals ie the vet, a rodeo, a trailhead etc. Then we saddle them and make them work harder..

And we wonder why most horses hate the trailer.

✨Click on the pictures below for how to trailer load your horse.
