Saturday 8/26/23: The Dainty kids had a great morning and Bexar seems to always steals all the oxygen in a room. We even took the breath away from Judge Linda Hurlebaus who pinned us with the points towards our championship! Thank you Judge Linda Hurlebaus, we are so honored to be seen as a quality producer of Italian Greyhounds and as the BOB winner in the Bred-by Italian Greyhound class. This win takes us in the Best in Group ring to compete against all the other Bred-by exhibitors. Big group of fabulous winners, no love for us though.

Time to dust off the Dainty Acres Training Studio and get back to work! We have taken some time off this summer to deep clean and paint the Kennel. We haven't been in the studio for 2 months, thank you Tractor Supply for letting us hang out in the isles!
We have 8 days before we go to Houston for the last leg of the Texas Death March. The Toy Club of Greater Houston puts on an indoor dog show every year, this year we will be at the Hyatt Regency Houston West the weekend of August 26 and 27. The nice thing about this show is we only have Toy Breed dogs at the hotel. And it is a really nice hotel!

TRAINING TIP THURSDAY

When training animals with positive reinforcement, we offer something the animal wants in exchange for correct responses. This is simplifying, of course, but it's the basic gist of it.

While other reinforcers such as play, toys, access to places, attention or praise can all be used to reinforce behavior, food is a primary reinforcer (the animal doesn't have to be taught to like it), it is easy to deliver and pretty simple to vary the value of.

Some dogs will work for what we would consider low value food reinforcers while other swill require the highest value reinforcers.

Additionally, some dogs will work for lower value reinforcers, but to for more challenging learning situations or puzzles.

Don't be afraid to vary your reinforcers and switch them up.

These are the most common gaiting patterns that judges ask for in the show ring.

When asked if you should turn away from your dog or into your dog the answer is always, whatever looks best for your dog. We recommend turning away if the dog is "up" and turning away benefits the dog and allows him to "collect himself" before heading back to the judge. If the dog is very small or lagging, turning in can help to mask that to the judge.

At about this time in 1927, the United States Marine Corps adopts a mascot: the English bulldog. Did you ever wonder why Marines are sometimes called “Devil Dogs” and why their mascot is a bulldog?

There’s more uncertainty surrounding the issue than you might think.

As the story goes, the phrase “Devil Dogs” came into use after the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood. It’s said that Marines fought so ferociously that the Germans called them “Teufel Hunden” or “Devil Dogs.” The Germans thought they were throwing out insults, but Marines took pride in the name.

“Teufel Hunden, German Nickname for U.S. Marines,” a recruiting poster soon blared, featuring a bulldog chasing a German dachshund and encouraging Americans to visit the “Devil Dog Recruiting Station.”

Yet the Belleau Wood story can’t be entirely accurate. The phrase first appeared in newspapers more than two weeks before that conflict began.

“The Marines, who have for generations been known as the ‘leathernecks’ the world over,” the Boston Globe reported on April 14, 1918, “are now being referred to by the Germans at the front as the ‘Teufel Hunden,’ the ‘devil dogs,’ . . . The nickname was welcomed by [recruiting] officials.”

But did the Germans really say that? “Teufel Hunden” is misspelled. Even spelled correctly, it’s not a phrase that would normally be used in the German language. Adding to the mystery, the first use of the phrase can’t be pinpointed.

Nevertheless, “Devil Dogs” stuck, becoming part of Marine Corps tradition.

The bulldog mascot soon followed, thanks to Brig. Gen. Smedley D. Butler, commanding officer at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. Butler was working to encourage interest in the Marines after the war. He put together a “Quantico Marines” football team—and he purchased an English bulldog named King Bulwark, making it the Quantico mascot.

Obviously, a United States Marine Corps bulldog couldn’t be named “King,” so Butler renamed the dog Jiggs. But Jiggs was more than just a mascot. He was an actual Marine! On October 7, 1922, General Butler signed enlistment papers for Jiggs. The bulldog was a private, and he had duties.

Jiggs was much loved, appearing at events where he could bolster the image of the Marines. He even appeared in a movie, Tell it to the Marines, in 1926. When he passed away in 1927, he was buried in a satin-lined casket and buried with full military honors. By then, he’d been promoted to sergeant major.

A few months later, on June 27, 1927, the bulldog was made the official mascot of the Marine Corps, in honor of Jiggs.

More bulldogs would follow, starting with Jiggs II. Indeed, for years afterwards, USMC mascots were named Jiggs or Smedley. Finally, in 1957, one of the dogs was named Chesty, in honor of Marine legend Chesty Puller. The bulldogs have been named Chesty ever since.

The Marines’ current mascot is Pfc. Chesty XVI.

“Since you relieved your predecessor, you’ve amassed a nearly spotless record,” Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro said at Chesty XVI’s recent promotion ceremony. “Literally. No spots on the rug, no sword biting, no assaults on your superiors and no barking in silent drill.”

This was a change from Lance Cpl. Chesty XV, who had to be officially pardoned when he retired.

“Bulldogs are internationally recognized,” an American Kennel Club article concludes, “as symbols of courage. . . . Tough, fearless, tenacious, and muscular, Bulldogs exemplify the fighting spirit of the Marine Corps.”

Semper Fi, Marines!

36 days until show time, when we go to the Freeman Colosseum in San Antonio to show our Italian Greyhounds at the AKC Conformation dog show July 13 - 16. Today we are back in the Dainty Acres Training studios dusting off our skills and practicing our routine. The Conformation show dog routine begins the minute we enter the ring. Traveling into the ring in a counter clockwise direction, we trot until the Judge motions for us to stop and free stack our dogs. One at a time, the Judge motions for one of us to put our dog on the exam table. The Judge touches the dog for a visual and manual decision on the dogs Conformation. That lasts a minute, and then back down to the floor for the "down n back". This lasts another minute, so for 2+ minutes the Judge is giving that one dog 100% of her attention. The final few seconds of undivided attention is when the Judge motions the handler back to the line up. This is the opportunity to leave the Judge with the best impression! After the rest of the dogs finish their turn, the Judge will motion for the group to move out in a circle and start pointing to the winnners. It sounds super simple, just a matter of running dogs around in a circle, but really there is strategy in showing and doing my best job at presenting my dog to the Judge.

To become an AKC Champion and Grand Champion requires accumulating points towards those titles.

The number of points you earn is determined by:
* How many animals are entered
* The area or AKC “region” you live in
* The AKC “point schedule” for your region

Championship points are accumulated by winning Winner’s Dog for males or Winner’s Bitch for females.
Note that championship points may also be won at some National Specialty shows y winning Reserve, IF the club applies for this and if there are at least double the number of animals needed for a 5 point major

Grand Champion points are accumulated by winning Best of Breed or Best of Variety, Best of Opposite S*x, Select Dog or Select Bitch.

April 9 and 10 were great wins in Kerrville for Dainty's Cashmere Beret. This little girl was a superstar on the table and in the ring, winning BEST of Breed one day and Best of Winners the next. Thank you Greater Kerrville Kennel Club, Judge Ms Lew Olson, Greater Kerrville Kennel Club and Judge Mrs Nancy Liebes for the attention.

Understanding Reach and Drive

Reach - is the forward extension of the front legs

Drive - is the backward extension of the rear legs

Ideally, the dog is balanced in the reach and drive which requires the dog's front and rear bone angles and lengths to be the same.

The RAT Test
Every relationship can be evaluated and rated based on the quality of respect, admiration and trust. This must be mutual to be good. If a relationship is failing, ask the question "Is he respecting me? Admiring me? And trusting me?" How about the other side of that. Am I respecting, admiring and trusting? If not, you have a relationship gap.

Another new story and new fur-family start today. Please help me welcome Sharon to the Dainty Acres family. Brady will be one really super spoiled baby.

18 Days. But who is counting.

Day 163: Monday 6/20/22 - I just watched "The Complete Head Straight Video with Trainer Eric Salas" for the 20th time! I love going back to the basics, and I always pick up something new that I missed! Getting control of the head, gives you control of the whole dog. The body follows the head, so get control of the head and many of the problems go away. And here is the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0BOaM_SKE8 but there are so many more videos to watch parked on Eric's channel on YouTube. Puppies are difficult to get to stand still because they are so wiggly. I started them in their crates with the crate door shut and a piece of bait they cant reach. When I transitioned them to the examination table, they already knew how to stand still. With the Head-Straight, I get control of the head and they know the stay command. So all that is left is to put the feet where they belong. We are 5.5 months old now, and they are really starting to get it. I practice 3 times a day everyday (almost!), and when I have taken a break from Head-Straight, I can tell the difference!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0BOaM_SKE8
Day 162: Sunday 6/19/22 - Today is Spa Day! We started the morning off with a deep coat conditioning treatment, a recipe from Kent Boyles and Eric Salas of beer and egg. While that was setting up, the pups got a mani/pedi on the grooming table. After a nice warm bath, and a run around the 90* yard, they were ready for a siesta. Each pup has a crate that I use for traveling and RV'ing. So as we get closer to show-time, I like to get them staying in the kennel for a few hours at a time. The pups took a 4 hour nap and I got a 4 hour break! We finished up the afternoon with a coat sealer of citric acid, cider vinegar and H20. They are shiny and beautiful! Check out this video, "Grooming Tips for Double Coated Breeds with Kent Boyles and Eric Salas"
