One of the most common questions we hear when working with clients is:
“Why do you use so much food in training?”
Because food works! And more importantly, it works in a way that builds trust, confidence, and long-term learning.
Food is one of the most natural reinforcers that exists. Every species on the planet is motivated by things that meet biological needs. Humans work for paychecks, praise, comfort, and rewards. Dogs are no different. Food creates positive associations, increases engagement, and helps the brain learn faster and with less stress.
When we use food in training, we are not “bribing” dogs. We are reinforcing behaviors we want to see more of, such as calmness, focus, confidence, recall, leash skills, neutrality around distractions, and emotional regulation.
Food is also incredibly powerful because it changes emotional responses. A nervous dog can begin associating scary situations with good things. An overexcited dog can learn calmness and impulse control. Training becomes communication instead of conflict.
And just like humans, dogs don’t need rewards forever at the same level. Think about learning anything new; encouragement and reinforcement help build habits. Over time, behaviors become more reliable and rewards can become more variable and integrated into everyday life.
We want dogs who WANT to work with their people, not dogs who obey because they’re afraid to make a mistake. Training should strengthen the relationship you and your dog already share!
