Building engagement through play is one of the most important parts of dog training. 🐾

A dog that is motivated, connected, and engaged with their handler is able to learn more clearly and confidently. Play helps build focus, communication, confidence, and a stronger working relationship… all while making training rewarding for the dog.

We will have a table set up at the Golden Paw Awards & Parade in Avon Lake tomorrow! Stop by & visit us! 🐾

The Golden Paw Awards & Parade is only one week away, and while we already have dozens of VERY good boys and girls registered… there's still room for more! 🐾 🇺🇸

This isn’t Westminster. This is AVON LAKE — wagging tails, lovable mutts, and kids yelling “LOOK AT THAT DOG.” It might just be the happiest event of the entire Jubilee... unless you're more of a cat person.

One of the most common questions we hear when working with clients is:
“Why do you use so much food in training?”

Because food works! And more importantly, it works in a way that builds trust, confidence, and long-term learning.

Food is one of the most natural reinforcers that exists. Every species on the planet is motivated by things that meet biological needs. Humans work for paychecks, praise, comfort, and rewards. Dogs are no different. Food creates positive associations, increases engagement, and helps the brain learn faster and with less stress.

When we use food in training, we are not “bribing” dogs. We are reinforcing behaviors we want to see more of, such as calmness, focus, confidence, recall, leash skills, neutrality around distractions, and emotional regulation.

Food is also incredibly powerful because it changes emotional responses. A nervous dog can begin associating scary situations with good things. An overexcited dog can learn calmness and impulse control. Training becomes communication instead of conflict.

And just like humans, dogs don’t need rewards forever at the same level. Think about learning anything new; encouragement and reinforcement help build habits. Over time, behaviors become more reliable and rewards can become more variable and integrated into everyday life.

We want dogs who WANT to work with their people, not dogs who obey because they’re afraid to make a mistake. Training should strengthen the relationship you and your dog already share!

Dogs, like people, can get distracted by their environment. Training in different locations with varying levels of distraction helps build reliable obedience and engagement in the real world. Progress isn’t always linear, and that’s okay… meet the dog where they’re at and build from there.

Building positive associations between dogs and kids in a safe, structured way 🐾

Using crate work, clear boundaries, and positive reinforcement to help dogs feel comfortable and confident around children. Safe setups like this help prevent stress and create better long-term relationships between dogs and kids.

Today was a good reminder that training sessions give us information.

He knows these cues well, so when he needed more prompting than usual, that was information… not defiance. It told me his engagement and mental state weren’t where they normally are in that moment.

Behavior is communication. Whether a dog succeeds or struggles with a cue, both give us valuable information about training, clarity, and emotional state. Our job is to pay attention and respond to what they’re telling us.

Small dogs, same standards, extra cuteness 🤍

Just kids, dogs, and a backyard full of memories. 🤍🐾🌿

Sometimes the simple moments end up meaning the most.
