As we close the week celebrating our veterinary technicians we thought it might be best to explain why they are so important to our daily lives.

So, what EXACTLY is a Veterinary Technician?

If you’ve ever visited Homestead Small Animal Practice, you’ve probably met one of our amazing veterinary technicians! But did you know just how much goes into becoming one and how much they do behind the scenes?

Veterinary technicians are SO much more than an extra set of hands. They are trusted with some of the most important parts of your pet’s care, including:

🐾 Monitoring anesthesia and keeping your pets safe during surgery
🩺 Collecting blood samples, running lab work, and analyzing results
💊 Calculating and administering medications
🦷 Assisting with dental procedures and monitoring recovery
❤️ Providing nursing care, comfort, and compassion to sick and injured animals
🐶 Educating pet owners and helping them understand their pet’s treatment
🩻 Taking radiographs and assisting with diagnostic procedures

And that’s just scratching the surface! They are problem-solvers, critical thinkers, patient advocates, and compassionate caregivers — often all within the same hour!

**So, what does it take to become a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)?** 🎓

In Iowa, the journey typically includes completing a two-year veterinary technology program and earning an associate degree. Graduates must then pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), an extensive exam covering a wide range of veterinary knowledge and skills, as well as meet Iowa’s state licensing requirements, including an exam on state laws and regulations.

It takes dedication, studying, hands-on experience, and a whole lot of heart to earn those letters after your name!

Sometimes, someone joins your team and fits in so effortlessly that you wonder how you ever did things without them! That’s Kyley. She has blended in so seamlessly that it feels like she’s been here for years, and her talents complement our team in all the best ways.

One thing that stands out most about Kyley is how deeply she cares for our patients. Her passion for veterinary medicine and the animals entrusted to our care is beyond measure. You can see her heart in the way she approaches her work, and we feel so lucky to have someone who cares so much as part of our team.

Candace walks through our doors each day and brings the sunshine with her! Her contagious positive attitude has a way of uplifting everyone around her, and her smile can make even the toughest days a little brighter.

But don’t let that sunshine fool you — this girl is a HARD worker! Whether it means getting pooped on, tackling some of the dirtiest jobs in the clinic, or jumping in wherever she’s needed, Candace gets it done without complaint. If it has fur, scales, feathers, or anything in between, Megan is here for it! Her love for animals of all shapes and sizes shines through in everything she does.

Megan has a special love for surgery and dental procedures, and she brings a wealth of knowledge to our team. She’s always eager to put that knowledge to work to help our patients receive the best care possible!

Some people have a special way of making everyone around them feel a little more at ease, and Heather is one of those people.

Heather brings such a kind, gentle presence to Homestead Small Animal Practice. Her compassion shines through, in the way she cares for our patients and comforts their owners. Tiffany brings so much laughter and fun to our clinic. She has a way of keeping us smiling, even on the busiest and craziest days. This year, Tiffany reached an exciting milestone by becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). We are so proud of her hard work and accomplishment!

But wait…there’s more! Tiffany is also our resident handywoman! From hanging pictures to building dog runs, there isn’t much we won’t ask her to help us tackle.

Veterinary Technician Spotlight: Stacie & Renae!

These two are the definition of veteran technicians, each with 10+ years as Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs), Renae and Stacie bring years of knowledge, experience, and heart to Homestead Small Animal Practice.

But their job titles don’t stop at technicians! As managers, they juggle patient care, team leadership, and all the behind-the-scenes office tasks that keep our clinic running smoothly.

We are so lucky to have these two experienced, dedicated, and hardworking women on our team. Thank you, Renae and Stacie, for everything you do for our patients, clients, and staff. We truly couldn’t do it without you!

Our amazing veterinary technicians wear more hats than we could ever begin to count! From patient care and cuddles to keeping things running behind the scenes, they do so much for our patients, clients, and team.

But the best part? Watching them love and care for every pet as if they were their very own. That kind of compassion is what makes all the hard work worth it.

🐾 Important Service Update 🐾

Effective January 2, 2027, we will no longer be offering dog boarding services.

This was not an easy decision, and we are incredibly grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us over the years. We encourage current dog-boarding clients to begin making alternate arrangements well in advance.

We will continue offering boarding for cats and exotic pets.

Thank you for allowing us to care for your pets and for your continued support and understanding!
