Ciri and I hit the town with the family yesterday! My best friend, Ciri's parents and her brother all had a training day downtown and it was a blast! So many new things for the pups to experience, marble floors, metal statues, elevators, there was so much they got to experience. Both pups handled everything with grace and both behaved themselves like absolute angels. If anyone is interested in a wonderful young dog with a calm, sweet, temperament, Ciri's brother Tanner (pictured to the right of Ciri in the pictures with the hay bale) is looking for a new home. Adventures with Ciri!!!

Last week Ciri, myself, her breeder (Top Gun Kennels) and her dad all went on an all day shopping adventure! Let me tell you this girl blew us away. She took everything with grace and dignity and had a bit of fun while doing it! All while getting some training done. We even stopped by Greenville's Pet Wants and found some amazing treats for the doggos! Overall a perfect day out with the dogs!

Let's take a moment and talk about puppy socialization, as I feel it is absolutely crucial for every puppy. Contrary to what many believe puppy socialization is not all about introducing a puppy to every dog and person possible. I actually limit what dogs and people my puppies meet while they are young. Instead I focus on quality of experiences. Introducing my pup to balanced people and dogs with a focus on good experiences and limiting bad experiences as much as I can.

The next aspect of socialization I focus on is experiences. But what does that mean exactly? I expose my puppies to as many sounds, textures, chaos and things I can, while keeping everything as positive as possible and encouraging confidence to be calmly curious about new things. I also try not to feed insecurities. Fireworks or thunder near by? I act like it's just a normal day in the neighborhood and distract if needed.

Now what does this result in you may ask? A calm confident puppy that can handle stressors in life and their environment. With every service dog prospect I work with one of their big tests to see if they can handle the job is an adventure to a big outdoor gathering like a fair or event downtown. It was Ciri's turn this time and I felt she could handle a little more than most pups can. So we donned on our gear and marched downtown with Havasu in tow to see the fireworks downtown. Needless to say she knocked it out of the park and handled everything like she had been doing it for years. Officially moving her from service dog prospect to service dog in training. Congrats pretty girl, I cannot wait to see how far you go!!

We will be cataloging the training process and adventures of my personal service dog in training "Ciri" on this page to help educate about dog training and service dogs. I truly hope everyone enjoys our journey and is able to take a thing or two away from it. So... Without further ado I am pleased to introduce the Adventures with Ciri series!

Ciri is a 14 month old solid black long coat German Shepherd. Ciri, aka Sirius aka Siriously? aka Padfoot is Siriusly Grim, is a very fun loving yet (true to her name) serious dog. Ciri is not afraid to let her wild side out, but she is also very level headed and grounded when working. She is just starting true training and I am extremely excited to see how far she will go. Fun fact: Ciri was picked out of a litter of 12 by my retiring service dog "Havasu".

Hello! I would like to Introduce myself, my name is Cat and I am the lead Dog Trainer of Spartanburg Canine Academy. I have been working with dogs most of my life and have a passion for helping dogs become respectable members of society. I have worked with everything from puppies to working and service dogs. I strive to teach dogs, and humans, through partnership, trust, rules, boundaries, enrichment and of course FUN!!! I want to help you have the dog of your dreams, in any way I can. From puppies to adults and from angels to trouble makers, we are here to help.
