As temperatures rise, so does the risk of blue-green algae in lakes, ponds, and still water bodies—and it can be extremely toxic to your dog.
💧 What Is Blue-Green Algae?
Also known as cyanobacteria, this bacteria can bloom in warm, stagnant water and sometimes forms a green, paint-like scum on the surface. It may look harmless, but it’s anything but!
⚠️ Why Is It Dangerous?
Ingesting even a small amount - by drinking the water or licking it off their fur - can be poisonous to pets.
🚨 Symptoms of Blue-Green Algae Toxicity:
Vomiting or diarrhea
Drooling
Weakness or collapse
Tremors or seizures
Difficulty breathing
If your dog shows any of these signs after swimming or playing near water, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
✅ How to Protect Your Pet:
Avoid letting dogs swim or drink from ponds, lakes, or slow-moving streams - especially during hot weather.
Watch for water that looks discolored, scummy, or smells bad.
Keep pets leashed near water sources.
Always provide fresh, clean water for your dog when outdoors.
Your dog’s safety is in your hands. When in doubt, stay out of questionable water!
