Meet Chase, a very good boy and the newest member of MSU's comfort canine team.

Working alongside MSU Police and Public Safety Detective Sydnee Zienta, Chase supports Spartans, providing comfort and compassion to those navigating challenges such as medical leaves, conduct processes or personal distress.

“A student was deciding whether to go to Counseling and Psychiatric Services,” says Zienta. “With Chase’s help, she decided to go. We walked her there, stayed as she filled out her paperwork, and she later requested to see Chase a few more times. It left a lasting impression on her — and on us.”

Maple is part of the team at MSU’s Pollinator Performance Center doing critical pollinator research and education. A retired police K-9, she uses her super sense of smell to detect bacteria in bee colonies to help prevent disease from spreading.

Currently, beekeepers must manually inspect colonies for disease, but dogs like Maple can identify disease much faster, which could make a big impact on the industry.

This project is one of many occurring at the Pollinator Performance Center. Operating since 2021, the center allows MSU to be at the forefront of honeybee and other pollinator research.

We’re heartbroken to share that our favorite furry team member, Whopper, crossed the Rainbow Bridge on May 2, 2025.
Whopper was a highly trained and experienced pet-care coordinator, toilet paper bandit, and nap enthusiast. Whether he was begging for snacks or snoozing (solo or with a buddy,) he made our days better just by being himself.
We’ll miss his goofy charm and loving presence every day. Thanks to everyone who gave him a scratch, a treat, or a kind word over the years—he felt the love.🫶🏼

BIRD FLU: Keep cats safe! Cats are very susceptible to H5N1, also known as bird or avian flu, but at this time the overall risk for exposure and infection is believed to be low. The virus has ravaged poultry farms, leading to the mass killing of over 150 million birds. Now, it's been detected in dairy cows, cats—even humans.

Signs of H5N1 infection in cats:
⛔ Respiratory problems like coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, trouble breathing
⛔ Lethargy
⛔ Neurological disorders, such as disorientation or trouble walking
⛔ Sudden onset of severe disease or death without prior signs of illness or injury
