Good morning, the main roads are good but some secondary roads are still icy. The rings are super wet and messy and will only get worse as it melts . We are canceling lessons for today. We will reach out to everyone to reschedule lessons . Thank you and we hope everyone enjoys another snow day and stays warm and safe !🐴

RFEC will make a decision on lessons for Monday by around 1pm . We are hoping the roads are good and the rings are thawed out by then..

Power .. this is power .. dedication .. life reflection ...

Stall cleaning .. yes ..ha ha you think its gross .. .. BASIC.. but at this time some of the biggest decisions in my life have been made. I have silently thought my way, step by step, through some of the biggest disasters and DECISIONS of my life. I have ugly cried my way through heartbreak all while cleaning stalls. I’ve thrown bags of sawdust in range as I thought about all of the sh*tty things going on in my life. Each stall has oddly given me a place of comfort as I stood, fork in hand, feeling empty during the times I’ve felt so alone. It has taught me to appreciate the serenity of the quiet. Realizing the ones in my life I can count on and the numerous fake people who are only present when convenient for themselves. I’ve enjoyed a free gym membership, as I’ve sculpted my back and shoulders into “he man”, just sifting away. I’ve stumbled my way, dry heaving, with sunglasses ....cleaning stalls through morning sickness, because god forbid my best friend be forced to stand in a dirty stall. Today I spend my morning cleaning stalls and processing my life. I’m mentally making life changing decisions, as I write this post, knowing that whatever I decide, it will be the right one, as it was made in a stall.

I understand that there are those who think us horse people should get “real” jobs. And that all we do is spend our days “playing” around. I’m genuinely sorry that you have never been exposed to a lifestyle that teaches you discipline, how to love unconditionally, put something other then yourself first, bust your ass for the things you want and need, kept humble by a 1200 lb animal, the real meaning of “hard work”, early mornings and late nights spent caring for something other than YOU. Those are things a “real job” will never give you.

Some of you haven’t cleaned stalls or obviously pay someone to do it and it shows.... it is literally the best therapy I could ever imagine ...

“I don't want to ride THAT horse!" - has been a big topic in our lesson program for a number of years.

The scenario: Student walks into the barn, sees their assigned horse on the board and suddenly has opinions . "Can I ride [favorite horse] instead?" "This one is too slow/bouncy/short/whatever."

Meanwhile, us instructors are over here like: "You're getting to ride a 1,200-pound flight animal who will teach you more in one lesson than most people learn in a lifetime, and you're COMPLAINING?!"

Here's how I handle the picky rider syndrome:
🎯 The Reality Check Conversation:
"Every horse in this barn earned their spot here. If they're safe enough for lessons, they're good enough for you. Your job isn't to pick favorites - it's to become a rider who can work with ANY horse."

🏆 Make It a Challenge:
"Today you get to ride [challenging horse]. This horse will teach you things [easy horse] never could. Let's see what you can learn."

📚 Education Mode:
"Professional riders don't get to choose their mounts at shows. Olympic riders work with different horses all the time. This is part of becoming a real rider."

💪 The Privilege Reminder:
"Riding ANY horse is a privilege.

The truth? Those lesson horses often make the best teachers. That slow, lazy horse teaches patience and leg aids and alot of stamina . That spooky one teaches balance and confidence. That bouncy one teaches posting rhythm. That one who you think is hard is teaching you .. teaching you that things arent always easy .. life isn't always rainbows and butterflies but we keep swimming "riding and learning " and take every opportunity as a learning experience .. that "hard" horse isnt really "hard " its all about perspective ... sometimes we need to be strong in this world .. DETERMINED ... we don't just quit and give up when things are tough or when we don't really like something ... or if things arent going exactly as we planned or expected BECAUSE lets be honest ... when does anything go just like we perfectly planned it ???? .... AND if we do teach this ... what are we really teaching these students ?

Students who can ONLY ride their favorite horse aren't really riders yet. Be coachable... I promise everyone of those horses will teach you something you will value all the days of your life ..

In honor of the 75th anniversary of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, TGSF is republishing stories about Hall of Fame horses, jockeys and trainers. This story about jockey Dooley Adams was originally published by TGSF on April 1, 2022. https://conta.cc/46EQmMn

Son of two trainers and father to another, Dooley Adams was seven-time champion jockey, a legend among legends at a time when jump racing played to packed houses at the hunt meets and at the major tracks both.
