An interesting call came in this morning on Main Street regarding a fox seen on a rooftop. Please be advised that the fox is able to move on and off the roof on its own and does not currently require intervention for removal.
The animal appears to be suffering from mange and may be using the rooftop as a way to stay warm. At this time, it remains fast-moving, alert, and aware of its surroundings. If an opportunity becomes available for medical treatment or rehabilitation, appropriate help will be provided.
If you happen to see the fox in the area, please observe from a safe distance for both your safety and the animal’s well-being. Chasing or attempting to corner it can unnecessarily deplete energy that it needs for healing and survival.

Outside / Community / Feral Cats Information

Some refer to them as outside cats, community cats, or feral cats — regardless of the term used, these felines are seen outdoors.
Please be advised that Animal Control’s intervention regarding cats seen outside is extremely limited for a variety of reasons. The primary responsibility of an Animal Control Officer (ACO) is to enforce State and local laws related to animals, intervening when animals cause a public safety risk, and the impoundment of dogs. ACOs also focus on educating the public on animal-related issues and how to appropriately handle them, amongst other duties.

Applicable Laws:
Currently, there are no Massachusetts State or local Town laws that prohibit cats from roaming outdoors, which is why they're not picked up.
There is one relevant state law, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 140 Section 151B, which requires that an injured dog or cat found on a roadway be transported for veterinary care under ACO authority.
Other responsibilities involving cats may include:
• Rabies quarantine enforcement when applicable.

Outside of these circumstances:
• Found cats are placed on the Town’s “Found and/or Lost” list when reported and are generally left in the area where found.
• If a found cat does not match any reports on the list, the finder may be referred to:
o A veterinary clinic for a microchip scan
o Local animal rescues or shelters for possible placement
Please note:
• In Massachusetts, there is currently no mandatory holding period for cats (only for dogs).

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)
The State TNR program administered through the Mass Animal Fund has been suspended for several years due to a lack of funding. There are local TNR programs run by cat rescues/shelters in the area.

If you have found a cat or are missing your cat, please:
1. Post on local Town social media forum pages.
2. Call the non-emergency police line at 508-764-5420 (Option 2), especially since the owner may not use social media.

It’s that time of year when raccoons are searching for safe, warm places to raise their young — and unfortunately, attics can be very appealing!
The Animal Control Department has been receiving multiple reports of these masked bandits taking up residence in attics throughout Town. Please be advised that nuisance wildlife, whether large or small, must be handled by a licensed Problematic Animal Control (PAC) Agent. These professionals are trained and authorized to safely and humanely address wildlife issues.
If you are experiencing a wildlife concern and would like assistance, the Mass.gov website provides a helpful list of licensed PAC agents.
As a reminder, unsecured trash, pet food left outdoors, and bird feeders can attract wildlife to your property. After all — free food, free rent, and a secure place to stay are hard to resist!

Please don’t chase!!!!

Thank you everyone for reporting the loose dog in the area of pleasant street and mill street. The dog is in flight or fight mode and trying to catch it is making it worse. The owner has been trying to catch it was well. It’s been running since 10:30 this morning and hasn’t slowed down.
