GMHA Junior Horsemanship Clinic GMHA Junior Horsemanship Clinic is a premier Eventing camp for ages 9-18 in S. Woodstock, Vermont Every year, GMHA hosts the Junior Horsemanship Clinic (JHC).

JHC is a premier Eventing camp for young riders ages 9-18. Riders bring their own horses or ponies to camp, and receive twice daily, quality mounted and unmounted instruction. Starting today: WEEK 6 of conditioning!

Suggested plan for Week 6: Walk/trot/canter up to 1 hour and fifteen minutes, six days a week. Continue trail work. Dressage sessions can increase. Start practicing movements from upcoming dressage tests, if known. Cavalettis continue with more gymnastics. Do not jump for more than 20 minutes per session & do not jump every day.

The 70th annual Junior Horsemanship Clinic is a premier Eventing & Horsemanship clinic in the northeast for youth riders ages 9-18, but we encourage all English riding disciplines to attend. Riders bring their own horses or ponies to camp and receive two quality mounted lessons and two unmounted lessons every day. Riders will school all three phases of Eventing: dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Our professional staff and extensive facility make this an amazing opportunity!

Starting tomorrow: WEEK 4 of conditioning!

Suggested plan for Week 4: Walk/trot/canter up to 1 hour and fifteen minutes, six days a week. Ring work, cavalettis, continue hacking. One good method at this stage is to have every other day be a dressage school, with alternate days in trail work.

Although separate from JHC, many campers decide to move in a day or two early to participate in the Starter Trials & Combined Test. This unrecognized schooling competition with an educational focus is perfect for those new to Eventing, bringing along green horses, or looking to kick start their week at GMHA for camp.

Starting tomorrow: WEEK 3 of conditioning!

Suggested plan for Week 3: Walk/trot/canter up to 1 hour, six days a week. No sitting trots and no lengthening. Introduce canter work as you did with trot work in Week Three. Ring work may be started. Work for ⁄ hour in the ring, then hack for a relaxed ⁄ an hour. Cavalettis can be introduced by the end of the week.

Starting tomorrow: WEEK 2 of conditioning!

Suggested plan for Week 2: Walk/trot work, ⁄ hour building up to 1 hour, six days a week. Introduce trotting with two 3-minute trots,
building up to four 3-minute trots. No sitting trots. By the end of the week, trot on hills with the horse on a contact. Use large circles, serpentines, and simple changes of direction – no tight turns.

We are halfway through the FIRST WEEK of conditioning!

Suggested plan for Week 1: Walking only, up to ¾ hour, six days a week. Start introducing hills. Start riding on a short rein to encourage the horse to round its hindquarters.
