💧 Watering Wisdom for Your NJ Lawn 💧

Pro tip from years in the field: While Mother Nature is planning on giving us some decent rain right now (Early May), don't get complacent! Start thinking about how you'll water when things dry up. Your goal is deep, infrequent watering. Aim for about 1-1.5 inches per week (including rain), delivered in 1 or 2 sessions. This encourages deep roots that can handle summer stress. Avoid light, daily sprinkles – that just leads to shallow roots and weak grass. Check your sprinklers now before you really need them!

✂️ Stop Scalping Your Lawn! The Height Matters ✂️

Been seeing this a lot around town lately! Cutting your grass too short is one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make. Here in NJ, for cool-season grasses like fescue, rye, and bluegrass, aim for a cutting height of 3 to 3.5 inches. Taller grass develops deeper roots, shades the soil (keeping it cool and moist), and naturally crowds out some weeds. Remember the 1/3rd rule: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mow. And keep those blades sharp! Your lawn will thank you.

Not bad for our first shot at an AI image. We may be 130 years old but we are able to learn a new trick or two.

We love our chickens but not the smell or the bugs. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is one of the best ways to keep both of those at bay. When paired with a DE Duster the results are almost magical.

Natural pest control - DE helps control parasites like mites, lice, and fleas that commonly plague chickens. The microscopic sharp edges of DE particles cut through the exoskeletons of these insects, causing them to dehydrate and die.

Odor reduction - It absorbs moisture and ammonia, helping to keep the coop environment fresher and reducing strong odors.

Drying agent - DE helps keep bedding and nesting materials drier, which creates a healthier environment and reduces bacteria growth.

Safe for chickens - Food-grade DE is non-toxic to chickens and can even be added to dust bathing areas where chickens naturally clean themselves.

Long-lasting effectiveness - Unlike chemical treatments, DE continues working as long as it remains dry.

Stop in anytime and get some Food Grade DE and a duster to keep your flock in top shape.

You don't stay in business for over 100 years without knowing how to coax reluctant seeds into lush lawns, We've learned a thing or two over the years, the most important being timing is everything—especially when following a parched autumn. Here are some tried-and-true tips for spring grass success:
First, don't rush! Wait until soil temperatures consistently reach 50-55°F. Test it yourself with a soil thermometer or watch for dandelions and lilacs to bloom—nature's signal that the time is right.
After the dry fall we had your lawn is likely stressed from drought, so give it proper preparation:

Dethatch and aerate first to ensure seed-to-soil contact
Apply a thin layer (¼") of compost to rejuvenate microbial life
Choose the right seed: drought-tolerant varieties like tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass blends. We recommend the Special Mix as well as Jonathan Green.

Don't skimp on watering! After a dry fall, your soil needs deep moisture. Water new seeds 2-3 times daily with light sprinklings until established, then transition to deeper, less frequent watering. This is important every year not just after a dry fall.

Remember: patience yields the best results. A properly established spring lawn will better withstand summer's challenges.
