💔 It is with great sadness I say that Moosie has gone to be with Jesus. I know he was welcomed with open arms and is now with his brothers.

Moosie my boy, you were mamas sweet fighty boy and always brought us a smile. ❤️‍🩹❤️💜

I did not expect this so soon. I thought we had another day at least but when I did my check, he was sitting and had gone.

I know I ask a lot lately but I’d like to get him cremated and brought home. It’s $300 to do so and they do not give discounts. After Pennys news this week we already broke after tests and meds.

If anyone could spare a couple bucks to help me bring my boy home I would be forever grateful.

You can use any of the links below.

We will go to Pet Passages and they will only take a call donation if it’s a large amount. I’m sorry about that, they are a bit hard to work with.

Thank you in advance if anyone can help. I’m honestly thinking of quitting as this is all too much.

💔 our old man Moosie, Miles brother is in hospice and we are preparing his end of life process.

We knew Moose didn’t have long after Miles passed in June. They were brothers and had the privilege to spend their lives together here at the sanctuary.

Moose was such a strong willed lil man. He was on the smaller side but would fight at any chance if you looked at him sideways. He enjoyed sneaking out of any door he could and going on walk a-bouts.

He is the last of the litter born on September 6, 2008. His brothers all have preceded him, Little Black, Alexander and Miles.

In a few short days- he too, will make journey.

As much as this tears another piece of our hearts, we will also know that he will be whole again. His body healed and back to the strong healthy guy he was. He was not well the last few months but at his age, there are limits and decisions had to be made.

A promise was made when they were born, that upon their first breath with us, we will protect you, until your last breath.

A promise kept. 💔❤️‍🩹💜

Please say a prayer for our Moosie.

** We will be quiet over the next few days while we spend our final moments of life with him.

This is how Detroit started with the change.

I remember Ace.

We still have flippers, abusers, abandoned and forgotten. But for the DAC facility, it was a new day. ❤️‍🩹

For those of you who aren’t aware, or weren’t involved at the time, the catalyst behind the significant change for the animals in Detroit was not a man. It wasn’t a woman either. Nor was it a group or an organization. Nope. It was, in fact, a dog. A dog named Ace. An emaciated, pit-bull-type dog who happened to wander into an Ace hardware store vestibule, most likely seeking respite from the streets and maybe a little food from the kindness of a person who might be willing to oblige.

Calls were made seeking help for Ace to both Detroit Dog Rescue and Detroit Animal Control. Unfortunately for Ace, DAC got there first. Knowing that DAC was a guaranteed passage to death for dogs like Ace, DDR tried to get him released into their care, but their requests were denied. DDR continued with their efforts, including a court injunction, and the fight to save Ace from a certain death went public very quickly. In short time, numerous animal welfare organizations, individual advocates and concerned animal lovers rallied for Ace to be released. Calls were even coming in from out of this country. Detroit’s phone lines were being taxed from the flood of calls trying to save Ace. I read a report stating that Michigan Humane Society’s request to transfer Ace out was also denied.

At the time (2011), DAC had a no-pitbull-policy, so if the owner did not show up with verifiable proof of ownership, and pay the fees (which were often exorbitant and often cash-only), the dogs would die, 100% of them. Owners retrieving them was not an easy task and stray holds were often not followed.

The mayor’s office and city council were all fully aware of this situation, but sadly, in spite of an unprecedented local, national and international push to save one sweet, skinny, little dog, Mayor Dave Bing and the city council looked the other way while Detroit Animal Control killed Ace.

Please forgive my language, but the collective response at the time was, “You motherf**kers, how could you?!”

That day, animal welfare in Detroit changed forever. The big push that started with Ace in 2011 grew into a crescendo that culminated in the major changes that eventually occurred at DAC in late 2015; changes brought about not by a man, not by a woman or organization, but by one little dog.

Director Harry Ward was out and the new Director, Melissa Miller, was in. The dark clouds parted and the magnificent sun shone through so brightly as we all reveled in the glory. I literally cried when I saw the first pitbull of many being transferred out of that dungeon of despair, by the curiosity and joy on their furry faces as they went from the dark to the light, led by local 501c3 groups to not only a better life, but literally to life itself.

Yes, DAC, now DACC, is way better than it was, but there’s so much more to be done. What hasn’t changed are the problems in the community that lead to dogs like Ace leaving this world too soon. Since Ace’s untimely death, there are literally thousands of dogs in Detroit that have suffered similar fates. Until drastic changes are made within the community, we may not see another glorious day in Detroit for the animals. We have capped out and the city administration continues to look the other way. DACC has been averaging a 65% Live Release Rate. If that’s acceptable, then there it will stay, give or take, or it may drop further backwards. We all know that we can’t foster, adopt, transfer and volunteer ourselves out of this. Changing the community, through education AND enforcement is the only way to get to a lower, more manageable, shelter intake level.

History has shown us that the city isn’t going to make changes voluntarily, it will need another push. A another collective push. A lot of people today don’t know how big the past push really was to get us to where we are today. It was the push for Ace. And for some of us, Ace’s story is not over, and neither is that push. Keeping his memory alive also requires us to keep that collective push alive. RIP Ace, and thank you for the fire that continues to burn in your honor.🔥🐶

❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 Penny just wants you to know she loves you all and she’s thankful for your love, kindness, donations and prayers.

She started her meds for the Lyme disease and she asks if you can keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Today, she is asking where is my dinner as she hasn’t eaten since 3:00 and is going to call the authorities for this abuse. Then she giggled and gave us a lick. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

We are still really short and have her spay coming. If anyone would like to help her, please donate through any of our links!!!

❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹Penny - Well, we have good news and bad news.

This poor girl has fought everyday of her life.

And she’s gotta fight some more. 😞

Only difference is- she has a team who’s fighting WITH HER!!!! ‼️‼️

❤️‍🩹👉Good news is- Heart worm negative.

💔👉Bad news is- she’s positive for Lyme Disease.

Being abandoned for the 120 days, at some point a Lyme carrying tick attached and gave her the disease.

We know it was while she was abandoned as the $hit bag rescue had their “vet” try to defend the rescues abandoning and say he did vetting on her. Im sure at that point it would have been said, if vetting was actually done, they would have said she was positive. But nothing- of course!!! Which it is my opinion- their idea of vetting is a rabies shot.

But again, the rescue still is trying to defend their actions by saying abandoning her was the right choice.

Well rescue- your actions not only abandoned her, but now you’re causing her pain and suffering.

Penny is also in the WPP- Weiner protection program - and we will fight you. And before the rescues addict friends go running back to dumb dumb with intel-
Tell them- you better leave people alone. If you seriously think your threats scare me- think again. I will never let anyone forget about the life you so carelessly threw away that’s now sicker because of your actions.

You wanna fight- I’ll fight you all day.

But understand WHO you’re going up against.

‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

We have started the treatment for the Lyme disease and the testing for just the blood panel was $400 and she has a few meds for 30 days. The urinalysis will be done at the time of spay since she will be under anesthesia. And yup- as she had her heat we are 100% positive they didn’t care enough to spay either.

We need some serious help with donations for her.

If you want to help an abandoned girl who deserves a real shot at a clean home, a simple doggie life that a great group of rescuers took with no plan or funds- please help her!! ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

The GoFundMe is in the comments!!
Facebook won’t let us post the link unless we pay $50 a month for their plan. 😳

Happy Gotcha Day Kenny!!!!

This handsome devil, Kenny, ran away from his aunt when mom was out moving his human sister to school. And he ran from his own home!!!!

Kenny was seen on the day of the jailbreak heavily in Ann Arbor. He was engaged heavily and ran for his life!

Then he disappeared.

Nothing.

For 4 days.

This always makes families nervous but this is because they are hiding. And honestly, I wanted him hiding while those roads in Ann Arbor were super busy.

Mom, family and friends were all out hanging flyers everywhere within the 5 mile radius making sure flyers were every post, pole and tree.

It’s been a long four days, but today Kenny decided to appear. I had told the family that Kenny was a smart boy. We didn’t have to worry about him cause he wasn’t really lost. He’s just trying to get his way home and it’s generally the humans that get in the way and prevent him from doing so. But luckily, as Kenny was walking his path home, he did have some folks keeping an eye on him who let Mom know that he was on the path towards their home. And of course we had the family ready for Kenny to just go walking right in.

His human brother was there and once Kenny got in the house, soaking wet, tired, and wondering why he did what he did, brother closed the door, and Kenny was officially recovered.

Congratulations Julie family and welcome to our Gacha club! I know it was a rough four days for you guys, but I did try to keep you grounded and informed telling you that he was out there and he wanted to come home.

Happy gotcha day Kenny!!!

🌟speaking of dogs that were blatantly dumped and left out by a heartless rescue-

PENNY IS EXCELLING IN HER LIFE!!!

This girl learns so much everyday. To trust, to understand what is expected, her integration into both human and pup packs- she gets an A++!!

She is trusted in the yard and doggie door and has a few friends. She mostly likes to lay and relax but we are watching for her silly side to emerge.

For now- she is safe, INSIDE, has a full belly and loved by so many.
