Winston von Welzow is one handsome 10–11 -month-old German Shepherd. He is curly-fluffy boy with a heart as sweet as his unique look. He has a medium build, with a tad more growing to do. He’s got that adorable “love bug” personality—always eager to share some love with you. Whether you’re heading out for a stroll or settling in for cuddles, Winston is always game. He walks great on leash, staying by your side in a perfect heel and greeting people and other dogs with calm, friendly confidence. He knows commands like “Sit” and takes treats politely from an open palm. In playgroups, Winston shines. He enters confidently, socializes well, and loves exploring the yard. He’s a fantastic greeter and happily engages in play—especially when an active friend invites him to romp around. He has also had a good cat-test. Winston is ready to share his life with you step by step, making him a joy to be around whether you’re going for walks, playing in the yard, or simply relaxing at home. Xena von Ziesar is a gorgeous 12–14-month-old German Shepherd with a heart full of love to give. Xena is a gentle and affectionate girl who is ready to find her forever home. She walks beautifully on a leash and has a calm, polite demeanor. She is friendly with everyone she meets and enjoys being part of the action, whether it’s going for a stroll or simply hanging out with her people. She is very people-oriented — she loves to be near you, snuggle at your feet, or curl up beside you while you work or relax. She is housebroken and thrives on companionship. She is also very dog-friendly! She enjoys the company of other polite dogs and loves exploring the yard or play area with her canine friends. Meet the April 26th Dog of the Day in the 2025 Westside calendar - Prince.

Adopting Prince from Westside was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. Prince is the most perfect dog to have as my friend, traveling companion and work buddy. He loves all people and all dogs. I couldn’t have chosen a better dog to mend my heart and make my daily life beyond wonderful with Prince by my side.

♥️🐾Sire is still waiting for that special someone to give him a chance at a home. He is a wonderful, smart and fun dog, but will need a strong pack leader with lots of German Shepherd experience who can set boundaries for him. If Sire sounds like a good fit for you and you would be interested in fostering or adopting him, please consider meeting him. He has been at the rescue for a very long time 🐾♥️

Sire does great on pack walks and in doggy playgroup at the rescue. He knows his basic commands and is always very well behaved on adventures away from the rescue.

PLEASE HELP THE ANIMALS!

Call / protest / make your voices heard against the proposed budget cuts to the already-in-crisis animal shelters! Westside German Shepherd Rescue deals with dogs abandoned everywhere, every day. What closing shelters would mean to dogs already suffering is unimaginable. Did Karen Bass forget that the dog she adopted from Westside was credited with saving her life?! We all need to value our animals; how far have we slipped as a society?
Please, Westside family, please keep calling these numbers, let our voices reach out for the voiceless!!

Garth von Ava is a stunning, larger-sized 4-year-old German Shepherd-mix. A magnificent, nearly 100-lb. all-black male, Garth needs a special owner who is experienced and calmly assertive. He lived his entire life in a home, but isn't suited to children, and would do best with one person or a physically active and confident couple. He is housebroken, good in the home and yard, has obedience training and knows his commands, including Sit, Down and Paw. He loves water and is a great jogging partner, staying right by your side and matching your pace. Garth was good with the adults in his prior home but we have seen he can be cautious with new people so he needs careful introductions. He is eager to please and treat-motivated. He is an active guy and needs an active lifestyle. When out for walks around the rescue, he is alert and happy to see other dogs, meeting them well. Strangers can’t walk up to him, and although he has lots of friends at the rescue, it does takes time. In playgroups he likes easygoing dogs and is not a fan of pushy male dogs. Cats are aslo on his list of enemies. Garth can come with some follow up help from our trainer who knows him well. He needs an owner who is aware of his limitations and never puts him in situations where he might feel protective. We know it will take a special person or couple to adopt Garth, but he certainly can make you feel special when his big handsome face looks at you with such adoration!

Venus von Vellmar is a stunning 2-year-old long-haired German Shepherd. She is so pretty that the goddess herself would approve of her namesake! Although our Venus doesn’t wear blue jeans, as the song would have her, she is nonetheless a feast for the eyes and a delight for the heart. She looks forward to her outings yet is calm and keeps a heel position on leash. Moreover, her doggie social skills enable her to smoothly glide through interactions during outings and group walks. Her looks haven’t made her haughty in the least: she is super-sweet, loves to greet any person walking by her and to bury her head in your arms. Your hands can provide the affection she needs by petting her all over. This smart girl has a medium energy level, enjoys following you around, knows her “Sit” and “Down” commands, is treat-motivated and takes treats gently. Venus does great in playgroups. She goes in with a comfortable and calm attitude, exploring the yard and being a good greeter. Beyond mannerly salutations, however, the dogs don’t hold her attention - her focus shifts back to her people, whose affection she craves. Female Foster Dog of the Day - Savannah von Schleiz

Savannah von Schleiz is a quintessential 18-month-old German Shepherd. She is a loving and smart girl who is housebroken and walks well on leash, meeting dogs with her calm energy. Savannah has been in a foster home with small, medium and large dogs and does well with all of them. She is even good with CATS, preferring to steer clear over interacting. She takes treats gently, is learning how to play with toys and chase a ball. She is very responsive to correction and is quiet but alerts when needed. Savannah's favorite thing is her people. She will snuggle into your lap and look at you adoringly as you stroke her soft fur. She will even sneak in some kisses. ♥️🐾Gorgeous and sweet Bronco is still waiting for a home. We can’t believe this amazing boy has not been adopted yet♥️🐾

Bronco did not have a great start to his life. He was in a home where he didn’t get love or attention. His previous owner let him wander around the neighborhood. A neighbor would lay a blanket by her door for Bronco to rest. She said he was so loving and seemed happy just being with her. She couldn’t imagine why the owner didn’t want him anymore and let him go on purpose. Bronco absolutely loves people and is good with other large dogs. He seems to be housebroken too.

Bronco is safe and sound at Westside, but we are hoping he gets to experience what it’s like to be in a home with a family who truly cherishes him. Please consider meeting him or share his post so we can find him a home asap♥️

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Theo von Tengen

Theo von Tengen is a magnificent 3-year-old sable German Shepherd. It didn’t take the volunteers long to label Theo "perfection" after a few minutes. He is so stunning and gentle. We don’t know his story other than he came from an animal shelter, but he looks like he was well cared for and trained. He knows his commands. Like all our other dogs, he gets excited when he walks out of the kennel, but once we round the corner away from the rescue, he walks right by your side. He is very social with other dogs and doesn’t take issue with many different personalities. Taking pictures of him was like a dream, he does whatever we tell him. We think he might have been a model before he came to us. 🙂 Theo might just be the dog you have been waiting for. Only one little thing: as amazing as he is, he is not a fan of cats, so he will need a home without any felines, please. Theo was rescued from the Riverside animal shelter.

MAYOR'S PROPOSED CUTS WILL CLOSE 3 L.A. ANIMAL SHELTERS!!

Closing the West Valley, West L.A. and Harbor Animal Shelters, plus laying off 62 shelter employees would be an unimaginable disaster! It will mean more dogs on the streets, more innocent lives lost, and inhumane conditions at the remaining shelters!

Petal von Pima is a stunning, 1-2 -year-old long-haired German Shepherd. Petal is a bit of a shy girl but is coming out of her shell more and more every day. If you give her a little bit of time, she’ll warm up and tap your hand with her nose, asking for affection. She is good on the leash, checking in with you as she greets dogs calmly. In the play yard, she is content watching the other dogs play and doesn’t mind when the other dogs come up and say “Hello.” She has also passed cat testing. Petal needs an experienced owner who will socialize her more with new people and guide her. Might you be that person? Petal was rescued from the SEACCA animal shelter.

FREEDOM IN THE NICK OF TIME!

In rescue, time matters. A lot. Just ask Hendrix von Helmstedt. He was set to be euthanized at an overcrowded, isolated rural shelter on Tuesday morning. He got a 24-hour extension and a network of rescuers blasting out his profile on social media. A desperate plea to the Freedom Rider, and commitment from Westside German Shepherd Rescue, meant Hendrix would welcome another day just in the nick of time. Wednesday morning he jumped into the arms of freedom so he would never have to worry about time ever again!

Remy von Remse is a very handsome 92 lbs. and growing, 11-month-old Anatolian Shepherd mix. Remy is a big, beautiful baby boy who is going to get bigger, but that only means there will be more of him to love. Part Anatolian shepherd with a large frame, he is very friendly with everyone, playful, happy, and eager to experience all that the world has to offer. A smart and active pupster, Remy will do best in a home with lots of activities and space to run and play with another playful dog if there happens to be another furry family member. (no small kids as he is still a big puppy). He's happy to meet dogs and is the life of the party in his playgroups, delighted to play and romp with everyone.
