Spring has sprung, and with it, all the creatures have returned!

We get calls for these little critters every year - with many owners mistaking these ringed, red bites, for ringworm.

These little buggers are called "no-see-ums", also known as biting midges, or Culicoides. These bites are commonly seen on the abdomen and chest of animals after playing outside in the grass.

If you see these little bites, don't panic! It's very likely that this is simply the result of bug bites!

If you notice these rings, or have any concerns about your pet - give us a call! We're happy to help determine if these need to be evaluated, or if we can save you an exam fee!

FINAL STOP!

Today we make our last stop before we deboard our heartworm awareness month train, functionality junction!

We get this question countless times every year; why do I need to test for heartworm every year if I give my prevention on time every time?

The simple answer is this; an abundance of caution, and realism. How many times have you found your pets medication spat out on the floor hours, or even days, later? Who among us has never forgotten a monthly, or every three month dose? And finally, do you know anyone who can claim with absolute certainty that their dog or cat is 100% protected against parasites?

There is another factor in annual testing that is not often spoken about in clinic - the "retroactive" nature of heartworm preventative. Most oral heartworm preventatives (think Credelio Quattro, Simparica Trio, Heartgard, etc.) don't offer protection for the 30 days following administration. Rather, they treat and go after any heartworm larvae that have been present for the PREVIOUS 30 days! Anytime we miss or skip a dose, we open up the pet to infection for heartworms that may already be present.

Another crucial point is the time it takes for an animal to actually test positive on a heartworm test; it will take six months AFTER infection for your pet to test positive! When you factor in the retroactive nature of the prevention, the choice is remarkably easy; test annually, and prevent year round!

From the companion animal parasite council: "What's an acceptable number of heartworm cases in the United States? The answer is none."

Stop number two on our heartworm awareness month education train - signs and symptoms!

We talk some big talk about severe symptoms of heartworm disease, but what about the early stages? As with many many disease processes, the earlier it's caught, the better!

We know that heartworm circulates in the body and ultimately ends up within the heart and associated vessels. Before fainting spells and breathing difficulties, how will you know if something is wrong?

Both dogs and cats will exhibit a progressive, chronic cough in the early stages of heartworm disease; this will worsen without treatment.
Another indicator of heartworm disease may be beyond the cough - if your pet begins to pant out of nowhere (even at rest) or can't tolerate their normal play/walks/exercise, this could be a sign that there is an underlying problem!
And finally, as the disease progresses, you will begin to see more severe symptoms including fainting spells, fluid buildup in the abdomen (due to heart failure from the heartworms), and significant concerns with organ function.

Don't wait - if you notice these early symptoms, schedule an exam with a licensed veterinarian today! And remember, the ONLY way to effectively prevent heartworm disease is with year round, prescription heartworm prevention!

HAPPY NATIONAL VETERINARY RECEPTIONIST WEEK!

Every year we take this week to honor the first and last team members that our clients see each day - our receptionist, or CSR team!

Overall the language regarding reception has largely shifted to CSR, or "Client Service Representative" - because that's what we do! Our CSR team makes sure to greet you with a smile, and gets you scheduled for the care that you need. They know how to adapt, troubleshoot, get creative, and stay compassionate.

A veterinary CSR is more than just a face at the front desk. They are our your number one line of communication to your pets healthcare team. They're the ones working the schedule to see if we can get you in sooner; they're the ones who take your call gladly, every single time.

Everyone please take a moment to appreciate our front line staff, Koren and Erica! Check back later this week to learn who they are and what their veterinary CSR superpower is!

We are making another stop at Education Station! All Aboard!πŸš‰

Did you know? Treating heartworm infection costs about TEN TIMES as much as preventing the disease entirely! πŸ’²πŸ’²πŸ’²

Let's talk about ALL the costs associated with a heartworm positive pet:

-financial loss. Prevention is ALWAYS cheaper than treating πŸ’²
-health loss. We cannot stress enough that the most severe risk of heartworm disease is sudden death (this is the number one symptom of heartworm disease in cats!)
-quality of life loss during treatment. Did you know that heartworm treatment is quite an undertaking for the body? We often have to prescribe mild sedatives to keep pets calm during treatment, and they are often required to keep strict cage rest. This means no running, playing, or other activity until treatment is done and deemed effective. And yes, this treatment is a series of injections over the course of a full month!

The smart choice is clear; prevent prevent prevent! Save yourself the money, and save your pet physical pain and discomfort during treatment. Prevent heartworm disease year round; they're worth it!

The heartworm awareness train is leaving the station - all aboard!

Let's talk numbers. Is heartworm really that prevalent in Michigan? Do we REALLY need to do prevention every month, and test every year?

Short answer: YES!!

Michigan's projected heartworm risk for Van Buren County continues to increase every single year despite recommendations for year round prevention; and we all know what that means: sick animals, and animals dying. Yes, untreated heartworm disease can become fatal incredibly quickly; though it sounds harsh, our job is to educate, and the severity of heartworm disease is no joke.

The Companion Animal Parasite Council reported almost 66,000 positive heartworm cases in dogs in the United States for 2023. In the state of Michigan, over 1500 reported cases in 2023. This 2025 incidence map supports rising numbers of diagnosed and/or treated heartworm disease in companion animals.

Heartworm disease is here, it's deadly, and the ONLY way to effectively prevent is with a prescribed heartworm prevention from your licensed veterinarian. Stay tuned later this week to see what prevention vs treatment costs, and why preventing the disease is both safer, and more cost effective!

Folks, it's time we had the heartworm chat πŸ™€πŸͺ±

You will find a lot of misinformation and anecdotal stories out there (which are just that - stories of personal experience not backed by evidence based research and science). We want to celebrate Heartworm Awareness Month by sharing factual, research backed education to those we hold most dear - our community!

It all starts with a single mosquito. Once a mosquito bites an infected animal, that mosquito has the potential to transmit heartworm disease; at least SEVENTY species of mosquito carry and transmit heartworm in the united states. Once that mosquito bites an unsuspecting dog or cat that is not protected, the cycle begins.

Day 1-14: the mosquito will act as a nursery for the heartworm babies to grow and develop into larvae

Once the larvae are developed, a single mosquito bite will transmit those heartworms to an unprotected pet, the heartworms will make their way into the blood stream. Within 7-10 weeks, those larvae will reach the pulmonary vessels, the heart, and the lungs πŸ«€πŸ«πŸͺ±

6 months after infection, those heartworms will be at LEAST 12 inches long, and they will begin mating and starting the cycle over again. These heartworms (called microfilaria) can then produce offspring for another 7 years, producing MILLIONS of offspring 🀯

Come back to our page Monday to learn the true statistics on heartworm prevalence in Michigan, and in the United States! Stay tuned all month long for tips tricks and guidelines to keep your pet safe and protected from this deadly disease! ☠️
