One of the worst feelings to experience as a pet owner is realizing your pet has gone missing. Considering only 17% of lost dogs and 2% of lost cats make it back to their owners, it can often feel like you may never see your pet again.

Unlike collars and tags, microchips cannot fall off and get lost. It’s with your pet for life.

Microchipping a pet is inexpensive and super simple: a veterinary technician injects the tiny chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. Because the chip is encased in hypoallergenic, bio-friendly glass, allergic reactions to chips are incredibly rare.

Most animal shelters and veterinary hospitals have chip scanners now, so microchips make it incredibly easy to get lost pets the help they need.

But remember: a microchip is only useful if your contact information is updated. Make sure anytime you move, you update your information with the microchip registry. There may be a fee associated with re-registering a chip, but it’s usually small and varies depending on the registration company.

Give your pets a better chance of finding their way home if they’re lost! Schedule an appointment by calling us at 518-792-6011.

Meet Monica! Our next LVT introduction!

Monica has been working in the veterinary field for 19 years! After a school project in 7th grade interviewing her family veterinarian, she started shadowing at Glens Falls Animal Hospital. She then went on to work there until her senior year of highschool when she wanted to broaden her knowledge of veterinary medicine; obtaining a job at Upstate Animal Medical Center working with wildlife, exotics and small animals.

Monica studied veterinary science at SUNY Adirondack and went on to complete her degree at SUNY Canton, graduation in 2016. While in college she became interested in emergency medicine and worked part time at Northway Animal Emergency Clinic.

In 2018 Monica started a 501c3 non-profit called Bark, Brew and Tattoo. This charity raises funds and awareness for bully breeds with a goal of ending their negative stigma.

Monica started working at Moreau Animal Clinic in 2020. She says her favorite part of veterinary medicine is emergency care, behavioral cases and client education.

In her free time, Monica loves spending time with her family and animals. She enjoys all things outdoors, the paranormal, going to concerts and obviously tattoo clinics! 👻🌿

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, created to remind people how important it is to keep their vaccinations up to date. But that advice isn’t just for humans—it’s vital for pets as well.💉🐾

Vaccinating your pet is a relatively inexpensive but hugely important way to protect his or her health. In addition to preventing many life-threatening illnesses, vaccinations can prevent diseases prevalent in wildlife and those that can be passed to humans.

There are even many local low cost vaccine clinics run by each county in our area for those who need that resource.

While any medical treatment involves some degree of risk, in the case of vaccinations, the benefits far outweigh any potential side effects. Adverse reactions are rare, and when they do occur are usually mild and short-term. For your pets who are vaccine sensitive, our veterinarians will provide a medical protocol that may include medications to give prior to vaccines.

It’s also important to note that all cats and dogs—even those that live primarily indoors—should be vaccinated. Many people are not aware that it is New York State law your pet is up to date on Rabies, unless a veterinarian excempts them for medical purposes.

Your Moreau Animal Clinic veterinarian can advise you which vaccinations are required and recommended for your pet based on age, health, and lifestyle. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call us at 518-792-6011.

Giardia Is No Joke!
Pronounced jee-ARE-dee-ya, it’s not a worm, bacteria, or virus—just a simple, one-celled parasite that can make your pet (and you) feel terrible.

It’s also pretty common. While infected pets may not show symptoms right away, giardia can cause persistent diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, gas, and vomiting—and can sometimes be difficult to clear.

How does your pet get giardia? By doing what they love to do: rolling in contaminated soil or f***s and then licking themselves, or drinking from contaminated creeks, puddles, and random bodies of water.

While there are no drugs or prevent giardia, it can usually be easily treated with a few days of medication. If your pet has become dehydrated or severely ill, additional treatments or a modified diet may be needed.

The other important thing to remember is that this parasite is zoonotic—meaning it can be transmitted from animals to people, although it’s rare for that to happen. However, it’s highly contagious to other pets in the household. That’s why if you have an infected pet, you should make sure to disinfect bowls, toys, bedding, litter boxes, crates, and other pet items regularly until your pet is recovered.

Have questions about giardia or have a pet with symptoms? Just give us a call at 518-792-6011–we’re here to help!

There are very few diseases you can get directly from your pet, but one of them is especially easy to contract: leptospirosis, a highly contagious illness spread through the urine of infected wildlife.

Dogs don’t even need to make contact with wildlife to get the disease—simply drinking water or ingesting dirt that’s contaminated with the urine of common backyard animals like squirrels, raccoons, and foxes is enough to make your dog very sick.

It’s important to know that this disease is also zoonotic, which means if your dog catches it, the human members of your family could as well!

Symptoms for both dogs and humans are similar and can include:

•Fever
•Shivering
•Muscle tenderness
•Vomiting
•Diarrhea
•Dehydration
•Lethargy
•Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
•Abdominal pain

We want your pet and your family to be protected! Call the clinic for more information on vaccinating your dog against this disease 518-792-6011.

Reintroducing the man, the myth, the legend behind Moreau Animal Clinic, Dr. Nicholas Outterson 🏈🦬

Dr. Nick was born in Medina, New York and grew up on a small family farm. That’s where his deep love for animals began—and it’s been his guiding force ever since. After earning his degree in biology from SUNY Albany, he went on to complete his veterinary degree at Colorado State University in 2012.

Dr. Nick has worked in a variety of mixed and small-animal practices with a focus on emergency medicine. He’s passionate about educating clients and helping them make informed choices about their pets’ care.

At home, you’ll find him on his own little homestead with three dogs, five cats, a bearded dragon, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks and bees. When the Buffalo Bills aren't playing, he loves being outdoors with his family—boating, kayaking, hiking, fishing—and living as self-sufficiently as possible.

Since opening our urgent care and expanding our surgical department, Dr. Nick has shifted more into those two sections of the hospital. He still has some weekly wellness appointments available. If you know your pet is coming up due for their annual wellness workup and you would like to see Dr. Nick, please call a few weeks in advance to book an appointment with him 518-792-6011.

New Beginnings

Jill and Nick Outterson became the owners of Moreau Animal Clinic on August 3rd 2018; they took over ownership after the much beloved Dr. Mark Yanus retired after a long successful career in veterinary medicine. As new owners they plan to continue practicing high-quality medicine but maintain the small town feel that the community has grown to love. Their vision for Moreau Animal Clinic is to grow with the community and always be willing to help anyone with their pet families in any way possible. Moreau Animal Clinic will be going through some changes but they will be positive changes for pets, clients and the community. Doctors Nick and Jill are excited to be new members of the community and promise to always provide every pet that walks through the door with an excellent standard of care at all times.
