Although a pet’s fur offers some natural protection, their ears and noses remain exposed, and vulnerable, to mosquito bites. 🦟

Just like humans, dogs and cats can experience irritation and discomfort when bitten. More importantly, mosquitoes can transmit serious diseases and parasites, including heartworm disease.

Never use human insect repellents on pets. Always opt for veterinarian-approved, pet-safe products, and consult your primary care veterinarian to determine the best prevention plan for your furry family members.

Don't forget: Indoor cats aren't immune, mosquitoes can easily find their way inside, and even indoor pets are at risk. While heartworm disease is less common in cats, it can be life-threatening. That's why year-round prevention is key. 🐈🦟

Keep your pets safe this summer by keeping them away from blue-green algae - aka cyanobacteria - which thrives in bodies of fresh water when the weather is 75+ degrees and sunny. Cyanobacteria is incredibly toxic and is known to cause poisoning in dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife, birds, fish, and even humans!

Pets can develop poisoning when they drink from, or even swim in, contaminated water sources. This algae may appear as pea-green-looking paint or as a green slime and is typically found in ponds and lakes, but can be present in oceans, fresh water, damp soil, outdoor fountains, and even on rocks.

If your pet is exposed to blue-green algae signs may develop in as little as a few minutes or may take up to 12 hours to arise. If blue-green algae is ingested, it can cause severe neurologic or liver damage. Symptoms may include drooling, disorientation, weakness, vomiting, excessive panting, collapse, seizures, respiratory failure, and could be fatal.

If you suspect your pet has been exposed to blue-green algae, immediately contact VESH at 413) 665-4911. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

Many snail and slug poisons contain metaldehyde, which is extremely toxic and even fatal to both dogs and cats. Pets are often attracted to the smell and will likely eat the bait if it’s within reach. Once ingested, metaldehyde impacts the nervous system, resulting in muscle tremors. Pets can die from hyperthermia, respiratory or cardiac collapse.

If you discover your pet recently ate snail bait, bring them to the hospital immediately for emergency care. VESH is open 24/7 and can be reached at (413) 665-4911.

You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

VESH is equipped with a state-of-the-art 32-slice CT scanner, also known as a CAT scan, that produces highly detailed 3D images of your pet’s body. This advanced technology helps our specialists diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions quickly and accurately.

CT scans are especially valuable for:
🐾 Trauma cases (thoracic or abdominal injuries)
🐾 Lung disorders (like bronchial disease and lung lobe torsion)
🐾 Detecting tumors, masses, and vascular abnormalities
🐾 Neurologic issues (such as IVDD or brain masses)
🐾 Chronic nasal diseases in cats and dogs
🐾 Orthopedic problems (like hip/elbow dysplasia or fractures)
🐾 Surgical planning to precisely locate tumors

Compared to traditional X-rays, CT scans provide much more detail, helping vets see abnormalities that might otherwise be missed. Plus, our fast scanner completes scans in seconds, minimizing stress and getting you answers faster.

Our exotics team recently treated a 1-month-old peacock (called a pea-chick!) at VESH after the owner noticed it wasn’t bearing weight on its left leg.

Fortunately, no fractures or major injuries were found. We suspected a soft tissue injury and recommended rest and close monitoring. Wishing this tiny patient a smooth and speedy recovery!

📸 Sporting soft, fluffy juvenile feathers, this little one is still too young to tell whether it’s a peacock or peahen!
