Warmer weather means hot dogs! Walk schedules can be adjusted to earlier or later in the day to avoid heat if needed. Walks can also be moved to near by, indoor, dog friendly locations if possible. If your dog likes water Im happy to find some safe places to allow them to splash around as well.

Frozen treats, nose games, water breaks and shady stops are always available to pups, especially in extreme weather.

“You must get in a lot of steps a walking all day!” Not really. Most of my day is spent standing while a dog sniffs and investigates.

Sniffing is so good for so many things. Learning about environment, deep, soothing breaths, sensory play, dealing with novelty and so much more. Less focus on steps, more focus on sniffs!

I love treat catching! In addition to getting cute pictures like this, it also can be a helpful tool in your toolbox.

It’s a way to get attention on something fun when we need to redirect attention. It can make a ‘boring’ treat more fun. It can be used in pattern games. It can save your fingers from some more eager treat takers.

Plus it’s just fun for everyone!

Sometimes you have to stop an enjoy the sunshine!

Stopping in walks is a totally normal behavior. Sometimes it’s to look at new things, sometimes it’s cause they’re tired, sometimes it’s just cause the sunshine feels good and you wanna take a minute to soak it up. Any reason is a good reason to me!

Walk time is the dogs time! It’s time to be a dog and do what they want to do and what feels good for them. As long as we’re keeping stress levels low and there’s no safety risk, I see no reason to not let them make their own choices. If that’s to take a break, that works.

Margot likes to watch “TV” by watching out the window.

As long as your dog isn’t getting over aroused or stressed out, a window to watch out of is a wonderful way to keep their brain busy! Many dogs enjoy watching neighbors, wildlife and weather out the window and while there may be the occasional alarm bark, it’s a way for them to keep up on what’s going on.

This can also make noises less scary for dogs. Being able to see where the noise is coming from can be a way to help make that sound less scary and less startling. It’s the same reason we, as humans, check out the things that go bump in the night.

Featuring 2 of my childhood dogs, Peaches and Scot, and baby Kratos for good measure. As someone whose childhood photos are almost all containing dogs, this trend felt too good to pass up.
