Cold for the week, especially night.

7 DAY: COLD INTO NEXT WEEK

MY FORECAST THOUGHTS: It's that time of year when you see "snow maps" across social media. Yes, wintry precip/snow could occur over parts of Virginia on Sunday and Tuesday. But, with these temperatures, it looks mostly like "cold rain" for the ABC13 area.

• THURSDAY: Cold and breezy at times for Thankgiving. Gusts near 20mph from W/NW. Lots of mid level stratus streaming overhead. Very dry air.

• FRIDAY: Mostly sunny and colder as another shot of cold air arrives. Cold wind! Gusts near 30mph.

• SATURDAY: Frigid morning w lows in the 10s possible! Cold and quiet. Lighter wind.

• SUNDAY: As precip will be falling into very dry air (this rapidly chills the air as the first drops evaporate) near ground, I could see some folks briefly observing/hearing sleet before changing to rain.

• MONDAY: Quiet.

• TUESDAY: Cold rain. Yes, you can find computer models showing snow in Central Virginia-- we often see this days away as computer models are overestimating cold air, particularly at higher elevations. Computers can be terrible at not accounting for snow melting before precip reaching the ground. Looks like cold rain to me. I'll post more specific updates as the date nears.

A mother in distress was rescued from an abandoned house with her ten newborn puppies, all under a day old. Tonight they could’ve froze to death .We are seeking immediate rescue assistance to relocate these puppies from the shelter to prevent potential exposure to diseases such as parvovirus, commonly found in stray dogs. The shelters is not suitable for these vulnerable newborns, and we lack man power to help this mother if it comes to bottle feeding to care for them. Any rescue assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Lieutenant, for your compassionate work today.

Cool little article to share about another amazing sport that walkers hounds are involved in. Read it is neat. C**n hunters get it done too and don’t forget the rabbit guys with their little short legs 🐕 get it done 👏

🤯DID YOU KNOW?🤯
The Treeing Walker C**nhound’s history began in the mid-1700s with English Foxhounds imported to America by Thomas Walker. The breed was developed further in the 19th century after a hound named “Tennessee Lead” was crossed into the Walker Hounds, creating the foundation for the Walker, Trigg, and Goodman lines. It became recognized as a distinct breed for its specific ability to chase prey, like raccoons, up trees.
Early Development: The history of the breed is intertwined with Thomas Walker, who brought English Foxhounds to America in 1742. Over time, these dogs evolved as they were bred for hunting in the United States.
Introduction of Tennessee Lead: A key turning point was in 1852 when a hound named Tennessee Lead was stolen and sold to George Washington Maupin, who was partners with John Walker. Tennessee Lead’s genetics were crossed with the Walkers’ and Maupin’s best female hounds, establishing the foundation for the Walker, Trigg, and Goodman lines of foxhounds.
Emergence as a Distinct Breed: The Treeing Walker C**nhound began to diverge from the American Foxhound in the early 1900s as field trials became more popular. A dog named Braise Speed, from the Walker line, stopped a fox hunt to “tree” a raccoon. This treeing ability, combined with its distinctive baying vocalizations, became its defining trait.
Official Recognition: The United Kennel Club recognized the Treeing Walker C**nhound as a distinct breed in 1945, and the American Kennel Club followed suit in 2012.
Name Origin: The name “Treeing Walker C**nhound” reflects its key characteristics: “Treeing” for its ability to chase prey up a tree, “Walker” for the foundational Walker family’s contribution, and “C**nhound” for its primary hunting quarry, the raccoon.

For the benefit of county residents who may not be aware, I would like to remind everyone that interfering with an active hunt and killing hunting dogs using a firearm is considered animal cruelty, a felony offense. This act falls under section 3.2 6570 and is regarded as torture. My department will not condone such behavior. Shooting innocent hunting dogs that cross land during a legal hunt is not justified and does not give anyone the right to take the life of that dog. I will work closely with the game warden to ensure that those responsible for shooting dogs are prosecuted. Anyone with any information on the act that occurred off of the area of Jones Trail this evening, please contact Halifax County Animal control you can message or contact the Chief 434-222-6586.

THURSDAY: COLD TURKEY!

• A strong cold front arrives late Wednesday. Highs flirt with 70 degrees just before the cold air blows in.

• We'll have 3 days colds in a row: Thanksgiving, Friday and Saturday.

• If you're Turkey Trotting on Thursday morning, wind chills will be in the 20s. And dry. Very dry air blowing in. Brrr!

We are currently accepting applications for a full-time Animal Control Officer position, offering comprehensive county benefits, a provided vehicle with a gas card, uniforms, and state insurance through the county. The selected candidate will accrue 10 hours of sick time and vacation time per month and will be required to work on-call every other week. A county-provided cell phone for work calls and a laptop for report writing will be provided, and the selected candidate will receive training from another ACO and the Chief. We prefer candidates who are strong-willed, able to follow precise directions from the Chief Warden, and committed to working in a fast-paced environment. Any CPR, or other certifications will be a plus. The selected candidate will be required to attend a three-week Virginia Basic ACO Academy to become certified within one year. Attendance and availability are crucial due to the high volume of complaints we address. Preferably, candidates should not be afraid of animals, including large dogs, livestock such as cows or horses, snakes, and wildlife, depending on the situation. A current concealed weapon permit issued within the state of Virginia is also preferred until training is completed by the DCJS fi****ms class.

Additionally, we are accepting applications for a part-time Kennel Attendant position, primarily responsible for cleaning on Saturday and Sunday mornings and holidays, with flexible hours except on Saturdays when the shelter is open from 9 am to 12 pm. The selected candidate will receive training from the Shelter Manager during the week and may be required to cover part-time shifts during the week. Our Chief Warden has an open-door policy and is direct, easy to work for, and understanding. Starting pay for both positions will be discussed during the interview with the Chief Warden.
