We need wolves.
Wolves need your voice. The Northern Rockies wolves are currently undergoing a status review to determine whether a relisting of the population is warranted. The USFWS has stated we can expect them to announce a determination by September 30, 2022. In the meantime, our collective action to protect the Northern Rockies population from continued slaughter must continue.
The status review is still accepting comments. Today's ACTION is to remind the USFWS of their promise to protect the Northern Rockies wolves in the event the states of the Northern Rockies fail to do so.
Use the talking points below to craft your comment on this USFWS link: https://www.regulations.gov/document/FWS-HQ-ES-2021-0106-0001.
TALKING POINTS -->
Remind USFWS that they made a commitment in 2009 to pursue emergency relisting if state wolf management frameworks were authorized that allowed for the unlimited and unregulated taking of wolves threatening their survival. Ask USFWS to adhere to its promise to protect the species in the event of unregulated state management.
Reiterate that the states in the Northern Rockies have passed legislation that allows for the unregulated take of wolves.
In Idaho, there is no limit to the number of tags people can acquire to kill wolves. More than 500 wolves were killed in 2021. A state-funded bounty program pays up to $2,500 for each wolf killed, including pups in dens.
In Montana, new laws allow for killing approximately 85% of the wolf population and has resulted in 25 Yellowstone National Park wolves being killed. 273 wolves have been killed in Montana in the 2021/2022 season.
In Wyoming, wolf populations have declined from 400 individuals in 2017 to 183 individuals at the end of 2020. Wolves are classified as predators in 85% of the state, allowing for no restrictions on their killing including no restrictions on time of year or method of take.
