Have you seen us? Ticks are active year round in your regional parks. These tiny parasites are members of the arachnid family, feed on the blood of mammals (humans), birds, and reptiles, and can carry diseases which may be passed onto their hosts.

Here's what you can do to avoid carrying a tick home from your next trail adventure:

• Stay on trail – And outside areas of tall grass, leaf litter or brushy areas. Keeps dogs on leash. Although they cannot fly or jump, ticks perch on plants and grass, waiting for unsuspecting hosts to brush up against them.

• Dress for success - Wear light-colored clothing to help you see any ticks that may have caught a ride. To help prevent ticks from latching onto your skin, tuck your pants into your socks and shirts into pants. Permethrin spray or a repellant with picaridin can be effective deterrents.

• Perform a "tick check" - At the end of your outing, thoroughly check your body, clothing, pets and gear for ticks. A lint roller works well to pick up nymph (baby) ticks.

• Dry before you wash – Ticks can survive a trip through the washer, so throw your clothes into a hot dryer for five to 10 minutes before washing them, as a way to ensure your clothes come out clean and tick free.

Do you know the signs of periodontal disease in cats or dogs? February is National Pet Dental Month and a perfect time to schedule a visit to your veterinarian for a mouth exam.

Don't turn your nose to your pet's bad breath! That odor might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage your pet's teeth and overall health.
