Day 18 — Training Tip Tuesday 🐾

STOP repeating the command.

If you say “sit, sit, sit, SIT!” until your dog finally sits, you’re accidentally teaching them that the first command doesn’t really matter.

Instead:

1. Give the cue once.
2. Give your dog a moment to process.
3. Help them succeed if needed.
4. Reward the correct response.
5. Repeat in an easy environment before increasing difficulty.

Your dog doesn’t need to hear the command louder or 5 more times they need to understand what the cue means.

Training is about building clear communication, not seeing how many times you can say “sit.” 😂

Try it today: Pick one behavior and commit to giving the cue only once. How does your dog respond?

Day 17 — 5 Things That Are Worth Your Money

1. A high-quality crate
A good crate can last your dog for years. Look for something sturdy, appropriately sized, safe, and easy to clean. It’s an investment in management, training, and your dog’s comfort.

2. Investing in training sooner rather than later
Don’t wait until a small problem becomes a major one. Getting professional guidance early can save you time, frustration, and potentially a LOT of money down the road.

3. Gear that will actually last
Cheap gear can become expensive when you’re constantly replacing it. Invest in quality collars, leashes, harnesses, long lines, beds, and other equipment that can handle your dog’s lifestyle.

4. Fun classes that challenge BOTH of you
Training doesn’t have to stop at basic obedience! Try scent work, rally, dock diving, agility, trick training, tracking, or another activity that gives your dog a job and strengthens your relationship.

5. Good-quality training treats
You don’t need fancy treats with a giant ingredient list. Look for simple, high-value options with 1–2 quality ingredients when possible. The best training treat is one your dog loves and that you can easily break into small pieces.

Bottom line:
You don’t need to spend money on everything marketed to dog owners. Spend your money where it improves your dog’s health, training, enrichment, safety, and quality of life. 🐾

Handling Exercise: Making Vet Visits Easier 🩺

Vet visits don’t have to be stressful! A little preparation can go a LONG way in helping your dog feel more comfortable and confident.

🤿 Muzzle training
Muzzle training your dog before hand can make it less stressful as it’s a predictable routine that your dog can rely on! All they would know is, I stick my face in this and get food or my toy! The muzzle should never come out only when absolutely necessary, it should be apart of their daily routine!

🐕 Exercise before the appointment
If your dog has a lot of energy, take them for a walk or do some training beforehand. Giving them an appropriate outlet can help them arrive ready to focus.

⏰ Give yourself extra time
Arrive early so your dog has time to settle in. Use that time to practice simple handling exercises in the lobby touching paws, ears, legs, or gently holding their collar.

👩‍⚕️ Advocate for your dog
If your dog struggles with unfamiliar people, ask the veterinary team if they can minimize the number of staff interacting with your dog. Depending on the procedure, ask whether you can be involved and help support your dog through it.

🧀 Bring what your dog LOVES
Favorite treats, food, or even a special toy can help create positive associations and give your dog something else to focus on.

💊 Talk to your veterinarian about medication
If your dog experiences significant fear, anxiety or is an aggressive dog at the vet, ask your veterinarian whether pre-visit medication or sedation would be appropriate. Medication can be an important part of a low-stress veterinary plan for some dogs.

🏥 Practice visits!
Ask your vet clinic if you can bring your dog in for short “happy visits” where they simply enter the building, hang out in the lobby, get some treats, and leave without being handled.

The goal isn’t to make it worse each time..

The goal is to build trust, confidence, and positive experiences over time. ❤️

A few minutes of practice today can make a BIG difference at your dog’s next appointment!

🐾National Dog Month- Day 12: 3 Common training mistakes 🐾

Don’t only train their is a problem, instead be proactive instead reactive to your dogs behavior.

Start small with what they do know and build from there. Rome was not built in a day.

When your dog is doing good, reward it! Being your dog’s advocate and leader in those times especially will help reduce those unwanted behavior’s.
