Every so often, I hear statements like, 'My dog chewed up my shoe because he's mad at me.'... However, our pups don't possess the cognitive capability to act out of spite. Their actions are driven by instincts and emotions, not calculated revenge. โค๏ธ๐พ๐
Just a dog.
From time to time people tell me โchill out, itโs just a dogโ or โitโs a lot of money just for a dog.โ They don't understand the distance traveled, the time invested, or the costs incurred by "just a dog".
Some of my proudest moments have occurred with โjust a dog.โ
Many hours have passed being my only company "just a dog", but not for one moment did I feel despised. Some of my saddest moments have been because of โjust a dog,โ and on those gray days, the gentle touch of โjust a Dogโ gave me comfort and the reason to get through the day.
If you also think โitโs just a dogโ, then youโll probably understand phrases like โjust a friendโ, โjust a sunriseโ or โjust a promise.โ โJust a dogโ brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust and pure unbridled joy. โJust a dogโ brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.
For "just a dog" I will get up early, take long walks and look forward to the future. So for me and people like me, itโs not โjust a dog,โ but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the memories of the past, and the absolute joy of the moment. โJust a dogโ brings out the good in me and takes my thoughts away from myself and daily worries.
I hope one day they can understand that itโs not โjust a dogโ, but the one that gives me humanity and keeps me from being โjust a human.โ So the next time you hear the phrase โjust a dogโ, just smile because they โjust donโt get itโ.

๐Important information regarding diets containing pea protein and other pulses (legumes, lentils, etc). The grain free diets are still being studied. If you have questions about which diet is the best for your pet, ask your vet- They will be your best resource for the most current information, and help you pick out the best food to meet the needs of your individual pet.

Dogs behave the way they do for many reasons. They do NOT do things deliberately to be stubborn or โnaughtyโ, nor do they aim to assert control. Outdated mythologies and training methods have detrimental effects on well-being and strain the relationship between a dog and their caregiver.
๐งฌA dog's breed and genetic makeup can play a significant role in determining certain behavioural traits. Dogs have genetic predispositions and breed-specific tendencies that contribute to their behaviour.
Some breeds are predisposed to specific behaviours, such as herding, hunting, or guarding.
The environment in which a dog is raised and lives can profoundly impact their behaviour. Early socialisation, which involves exposing a puppy to a wide range of people, animals, and environments during their critical developmental period, is crucial for building confidence and shaping a dog's social behaviour to reduce fear or aggression.
Overstimulation can cause all kinds of unwanted behaviours as it overwhelms their senses and can lead to hyperactivity or erratic responses. For example, if a dog is exposed to loud noises, multiple people, and various stimuli all at once, or on a daily basis, they might exhibit excessive excitable behaviour, poor impulse control, become agitated and exhibit behaviours like jumping, barking, or pulling on the leash, as their senses are overwhelmed by the excessive input.
Previous experiences and learning consequences can influence a dog's behaviour. Traumatic experiences, in particular, can lead to fear, anxiety, or aggression.
How a dog is trained and educated by their caregiver or handler can significantly affect their behaviour. Consistent, positive reinforcement-based training can lead to desired behaviours, while harsh or inconsistent methods can result in confusion or fear.
A dog's health, including their physical and mental well-being, can influence their behaviour. Illness, pain, or discomfort can lead to changes in behaviour.
A dog's emotional state, including fear, anxiety, and excitement, can affect their behaviour. For example, a fearful dog may display unpredictable defensive reactive behaviours or might avoid any encounters and run away trying to hide. While a confident dog may exhibit playfulness and a relaxed demeanour.
A dog can become frustrated and destructive if their mental and physical needs are not met. This dog, full of pent-up energy and boredom, may become frustrated and exhibit poor impulse control. In their frustration, they might resort to destructive behaviours, such as chewing furniture, digging up the garden, or incessant barking. This destructive behaviour is often an expression of their frustration and an attempt to alleviate their built-up energy and mental stress.
The type of diet a dog receives can significantly influence their behaviour, with high-quality nutrition promoting better energy levels, mood, and overall well-being, while poor diet choices can lead to issues like irritability, hyperactivity, or digestive problems.
As dogs age, they may experience canine cognitive decline, which can manifest as changes in memory, learning, and behaviour. This condition can lead to increased confusion, disorientation, and altered social interactions in older dogs.
It is really important to understand that each dog is unique, and their behaviour can vary widely, even within the same breed. Dogs use body language, vocalizations, and other forms of communication to express their needs, emotions, and intentions. Understanding a dog's communication cues is essential for interpreting their behaviour.

Our beloved Sue has been here at Cascade Animal Clinic for 32 years! She has built some incredible life-long relationships with clients and their pets, and she loves that despite all this time she always sees or experiences something new at the clinic. She has a rambunctious young Dalmatian named Luca and a lovely little kitty named Lilly whom she adores. When she is not at work, she is either enjoying a good book, exploring the outdoors, or enjoying time with her family and grandkids!
๐ฃ Hello, dear friends! Today, I have the joy of volunteering at a worthwhile event... Beck's Place, in partnership with Seattle Veterinary Outreach, is hosting a Veterinary Wellness & Sick Animal Clinic.
We're reaching out to our beloved community in Monroe, especially those who are unhoused. We understand that pets are family, and we're here to lend a helping hand. If you know anyone who could benefit from our services, please let them know.
We're eager to serve and help as many pets as we can. After all, every little paw print makes a big impact on our hearts. ๐พ๐๐๐ผ.

TRAINING TIP THURSDAY
What kind of relationship are you looking for with your dog? Have you ever thought about that?
When I watch people at dog shows, whether it be owner handlers or professional handlers, I can tell what kind of relationship they want with their dogs. I can see what is important to them in terms of relationship.
For some, it's clear that the relationship is strictly a "business" relationship. Like when I recently watched a handler ignore the dog's request for some help with his concerns around the ring. Her pushing him off her knee and saying, "No, you're fine, deal with it" is clearly not what someone wanting a trusting relationship wants. When a dog is looking to you for help, support or even a simple pat and "It's okay, you got this, bud" and you ignore that request, the dog can't count on that person. That is not the relationship I want with any dogs, not my own or others. I look out for dogs.
For other people, the relationship they seek is one of trust, understanding and mutual respect. We care deeply about how the dog feels. Wow, what a concept. Dogs have feelings. So, if we are going to ask them to perform in a sport where they are touched all over by strangers, surrounded by other dogs, perform even when tired, in season or when they don't feel like it, don't we owe it to them to listen and respond when they let us know they need something?
Think about the relationship you want with your dogs or dogs you handle for others. We hope you will choose more than a business relationship. The connection when a dog truly trusts their handler is like nothing else in a life with dogs.
