Since all of western WA is under water right now, here's an exercise you can do with your horse whether you're riding or not.

"Straddle a Pole"

Walking down the length of a pole is more difficult than it seems! It is a great exercise in not rushing! Even just standing with their front feet around the pole, then all 4 feet, will give the body benefits:

•Even balance & stability
•Proprioception
•Limb Coordination
•Engaging deep stabilizing muscles
•Nervous system relaxation

This is the same in horses. Fascia connects the whole body, and those facial chains really do have direct influences that alter posture ➡️ create compensation patterns ➡️ leads to pain ➡️ results in injury. This is why I say regular bodywork will help reduce the chance of vet bills and lost time.

The Equine Esophagus:
🌾 From Mouth to Stomach

The esophagus is a muscular tube that utilizes contractions like a wave to push food from the mouth to the stomach.

After participating in a dissection, I got to see what the esophagus truly looks like and I was shocked at what I saw. For an animal as large as a horse is, I was expecting to see a large tube that clearly moves large amounts of feed.

An average horse should be eating about 20 pounds of feed daily. How does a horse move that much feed through such a small space? Upon palpation, I found that the diameter of the esophagus matched the size of my pointer finger!

That realization made me stop and think about modern feeding practices. Horses are designed to graze, eating small amounts throughout the day.

Bolting feed or having poor dentition will make a horse more prone to choking. Fully chewing their feed, chewing it down properly, and moistening that feed with saliva is necessary to avoid choking.

🌾What you can do to help your horse avoid choking:
•Provide the ability to graze by offering 24/7 pasture or hay access
•Utilize slow feed nets or feeders to help mimick grazing if 24/7 access can't be provided or to help prevent bolting hay
•Break up the amount of commercial feeds into 2-3 servings daily instead of 1 large serving
•Take the time to thoroughly soak feed if needed
•Yearly dental exams & floats
