November is National Senior Pet Month!
Puppies and kittens are little attention thieves. They typically steal the show by hooking us better than the most recent viral dance video skipping across your social feed. Unfortunately, that young cuteness often outshines the quieter needs of our older, senior companions.
If your pet is well into adulthood, then it's a good idea to dismiss those young ragamuffins for an afternoon and instead--pay special attention to activity level, physical appearance, and any other new behaviors of your senior. Changes in activity levels or gait, for instance, could indicate creeping arthritis. Another example is if you're noticing a lack of or delayed response when called. This may be a sign that your pet's hearing has started to erode.
Aside from these physical observations, there are other ways to root-out causes of change. Performing a senior, wellness blood panel, for instance, is a great way to get eyes on what's considered normal liver function for your favorite feline counter-surfer.
This month, be sure to take extra time with your favorite senior pet. Whether it's extra snuggles, a more interesting walks for enrichment, or just a much-needed bath--those bonus minutes you spend can have the benefit of spotting age-related health changes.
