Summer Heat + Short Snouts = Deadly Serious Risk βοΈ
As temperatures rise, so does the danger of heatstroke for our furry friends, ESPECIALLY brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boxers.
π΄ Dogs donβt sweat like we do. They cool off by panting and through their nasal cavities. But not all noses are created equal!
π As this graphic shows, dogs like German Shepherds have a much larger nasal cavity devoted to cooling their bodies, while flat-faced breeds have much less space to regulate their temperature, which makes them far more prone to overheating.
π For brachycephalic breeds, just a short walk in the sun or a few minutes in a hot car can be deadly.
π₯ Heat Safety Tips:
β
Always provide fresh water and shade.
β
Avoid walks or outside time during the hottest part of the day.
β
Never leave your dog in a parked car for any amount of time.
β
Watch for signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, purple tongue or collapse.
β
Know your breed's limits β some can't safely handle heat at all.
