👉 Trimming a dog’s nails is important for several reasons:
➡️ Comfort and Health: Overly long nails can cause discomfort to the dog, interfere with their ability to walk, and even lead to health issues such as paw deformities.
➡️ Prevents Injuries: Long nails can easily break, causing painful injuries. This is especially important for active dogs that run and play.
➡️ Prevents Posture Problems: Excessively long nails can alter the dog’s posture, leading to joint and spine issues.
➡️ Hygiene: Long nails can accumulate dirt and debris, increasing the risk of infections.
➡️ Less Surface Damage: At home, long nails can scratch floors, furniture, and even injure the owners.
➡️ Better Traction: Short nails help the dog maintain better traction while walking, which is especially important on slippery surfaces.
➡️ Prevents Fungal and Bacterial Infections: Long nails can harbor bacteria and fungi, which can cause infections on the paws.
👉 Trimming your dog’s nails should be done carefully to avoid accidentally cutting the blood vessels in the nails (known as “quick”). If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, it’s advisable to seek a veterinarian or professional groomer to safely perform the trimming. The trimming schedule depends on your dog’s nail growth, but typically checking and, if necessary, trimming the nails every 3-4 weeks is a good frequency.
