Rocky was surrendered to CACC back in March. Unfortunately he suffered from chronic ear infections which were left untreated. For months he needed ear flushes and compounded medications to treat the infection in his ears. After 5 months in foster he was ready to find his forever home! Rick was looking to adopt and fell in love with Rocky’s listing. The meet and greet sealed the deal and Rocky is officially adopted! We are so excited for these two who are already bonding quickly. Thank you to his foster family for all his care. We can’t save dogs without them! Congratulations Rocky and Rick!

Rosie (Tally) is a smart and spunky girl who has already learned house manners and gets along great with her canine foster brother and sister. She was rescued from CACC where she was brought in as a stray. According to her microchip she’s approximately 5 years old, but she seems much younger to us! She loves walks, car rides and trips to the dog beach. Rosie and her foster brother Walter could wrestle and play from morning to night if allowed! She shows no food or toy aggression with her foster siblings. Her older (grumpy) foster sister is the matriarch and Rosie is just fine with that and gives her space. She’s a very agile girl and is fast and would probably do great at agility training! Rosie is completely potty trained and is able to stay home without being destructive. She is very affectionate, and loves chest and belly rubs and behind the ear scratches. Rosie is great with her human brothers too (ages 11 and 14). She loves tug of war and to play with pretty much any toy! Rosie has lots of energy but will settle down and rest when needed. She’s food motivated and loves to show off her sit and hi five. Rosie would absolutely shine learning new tricks as she has “working line” energy and really enjoys having a job. Her foster family said she’s a great dog and her forever family will be very lucky!

Maxxine was one of four dogs we rescued from a local animal control after being released as “evidence” from a cruelty investigation. The owner was convicted of animal cruelty. A witness revealed the owner was throwing puppies against the wall, neglecting dogs, and he was also charged with domestic violence. Maxxine spent the first 5 months of her life in a shelter with little socialization. Our foster Sara took her in and helped her learn how to be a dog. While waiting for her forever home, Maxxine broke her leg playing in the yard. We could’ve amputated her leg, but with the start to life this girl had, we knew we needed to try and save her leg. She underwent surgery at UW Madison and we were able to save her leg! After weeks of strict crate rest, Maxxine was given the all clear to resume normal activity and the search for her forever home was back on!

Maxxine LOVED other dogs and we knew she needed some friends in her forever home. Rachel and Ryan were looking to adopt and we thought Maxxine could be the perfect fit. The dogs hit it off immediately and Maxxine, now Freyja has been adopted!!! We can’t thank Sara her foster mom for caring for her for so many months and through a major surgery! We also want to thank our supporters for funding the surgery to save her leg Congratulations sweet girl — you finally got your happy ending!!!

Gilbert was found as a stray in rough shape earlier this year. He had ear and skin infections, was underweight, and heartworm positive. He recently completed his heartworm treatment and is ready to find his forever home! Gilbert is estimated to be around 8 years old, though he acts younger. He is a sweet boy that does well with people, other dogs, and cats! Gilbert loves to chew on bones, does great on car rides, and walks well on leash. He is your typical shepherd that is eager to learn and picks up training quickly. Gilbert doesn’t love his crate but he tolerates it, though his foster mom doesn’t think he needs it. He hasn’t been around young children and at times can be clumsy, so school age children maybe best. Gilbert is overall a lovely boy who deserves the best home! If interested in adopting Gilbert, please apply at www.gsrescue1.org

Meet Schnapps, a 6 year old German Shepherd! He is looking for his furever home after being picked up as a stray.

Schnapps is the perfect companion, a homebody up to cuddling on the couch, protecting the home, or playing fetch in the yard. The only thing Schnapps loves more than playing with his toys, is being with his family. He is dog friendly with respectful dogs and enjoys playing with his foster brother.

Schnapps is also full of funny quirks. Going past his interesting appearance, he makes hilarious sounds comparable to a walrus or donkey. To get his foster brother to play with him, he nudges him with his snoot as if he's playing tag.

If you're looking for a silly upstanding pup who doubles as a couch potato, Schnapps is your guy! Apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your app is on file

Vela is a beautiful approximately 8 month old found as a stray in Chicago. She is fostered with a male German shepherd that she loves to play with and boss around. Vela is still puppy mouthy and would benefit from training classes like any young GSD! She loves to play with toys and hang out in the baby pool. She is sweet and cuddly with her people. Vela does bark when she meets new people, so a GSD experienced home committed to training and socialization will help her blossom into the best girl! If interested in Vela, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

Harper our most recent rescue from CACC is hanging out with our friends at Playful Pets Playtime. CACC has no open cages and we have no open foster homes, so we’re grateful they could help her.

Harper weighs 47 lbs, spayed microchipped and updated on vaccines. Harper is ALL puppy! She’s got lots of energy and enjoys playing in the baby pool. Harper is jumpy and excitable, so she will require obedience training. She is good with other dogs, but hasn’t been cat tested.

If interested in fostering Harper or possibly adopting, apply at www.gsrescue1.org

FOSTER FOUND !

Anya is a 12 month old spayed female in need of a foster or adoptive home. Unfortunately she is losing her current foster home and needs to be moved ASAP. Anya was found as a stray and rescued from CACC. She is on the smaller side and weighs 46 lbs. Anya is housebroken and requires a crate.

Anya is sweet, goofy, and loyal to her person. She loves to go for walks and loves peanut butter! Anya will let you know if she needs to potty by pacing gently nudging the door handle. Anya is very cuddly and would love a home that allows her on the sofa!

No rescue dog is perfect of course, and Anya requires training for leash reactivity towards other dogs. At timeses she can have reactivity towards men. Though she’s currently in the city, a less busy area would be more ideal for her. Anya has successfully been introduced to a male golden retriever, so she could potentially live with an easy going male dog. She doesn’t seem to care for small dogs; she Anya has done well meeting children, but we suggest no children due to her reactivity.

If interested in fostering or adopting Anya, please apply at www.gsrescue1.org or email [email protected] if your app is on file

Our Story

GSR (based in Chicago with a focus on Chicago and the immediate surrounding suburbs) is always willing to provide medical care due to donations from special people who sponsor special needs dogs and donate to assist our general rescue efforts of our favorite breed. German Shepherd Rescue rescues dogs from high kill shelters mainly in Illinois. We do help dogs in NW Indiana, Southern WI and even MI when we have transportation to aid in their rescue and transport to us. Meet & Greet Events: A Meet & Greet event is where you can meet GSR and find out more about dogs that are available for foster/adoption. We set up private meetings at this time to meet our dogs in foster care. GSR will be at Petsmart in Northbrook, IL on the 1st Saturday of the month. The 3rd or 4th Sunday of each month is scheduled at Petsmart in Schaumburg, IL.
