Australia hunts feral cats because not doing it already wiped out their wildlife. When Europeans brought cats to Australia, they turned loose a perfect predator in an ecosystem that had zero defenses for it. No big native carnivores. No evolutionary fear of cats. The result? Feral cats now kill billions of native animals every year, bandicoots, quolls, numbats, native mice, ground-nesting birds, parrots, reptiles, entire species that literally never stood a chance. Australia has lost dozens of animals forever, and cats are one of the main reasons.

So they hunt them. Hard. Not because they’re cruel, not because they enjoy it, but because pretending it’s “mean” to kill invasive predators already proved way worse. Australia also released rabbits, foxes, pigs, goats, and cane toads, and every one of them blew the system apart. Cats are the most destructive of all because they kill nonstop, even when they’re not hungry. This isn’t sport. This is cleanup. And the guy in that photo? He’s not the bad guy, he’s the one dealing with the consequences of humans screwing up an ecosystem by releasing predators onto the landscape!
