If your horse only behaves through intimidation, that’s not respect.

Congrats.
You taught a prey animal that making mistakes is unsafe.

A horse being too scared to react is not the same thing as a horse being confident, soft, or mentally with you.

Because eventually one of two things happens:
they shut down completely…
or the pressure finally leaks out sideways.

Neither one is good training.

The best horses aren’t the ones walking on eggshells around people.
They’re the ones that trust the conversation enough to stay present when things get hard.

People love to ask how long it took a horse to get their first ride, but I think a better question is how long it took for the horse to actually feel okay about it.

I care a whole lot less about how fast a horse gets sat on, and a whole lot more about how they feel when it happens.

Because the real question isn’t:
“How long did it take to get the first ride?”

It’s:
“How long did it take for the horse to actually feel safe, confident, and mentally prepared for that first ride?”

Some horses it happens quickly.
Some need time to process.
Some carry tension in their body from pain, fear, confusion, or past experiences.

You can put a saddle on a worried horse.
You can climb on a shut down horse.
That doesn’t mean they’re truly okay.

The goal isn’t to win a race to first rides.
The goal is building a horse that stays soft in their mind, confident in their body, and able to move forward without feeling like they have to defend themselves.

Foundation takes the time it takes. And rushing that part usually shows up later.

One of the biggest things that holds people and horses back isn’t a lack of ability.

It’s everything we let get in the way of it.

The wrong environment.
The wrong expectations.
The wrong people.
The constant noise telling you who you should be
instead of letting things develop the way they need to.

You see it in horses all the time.

They don’t struggle because they can’t do it.
They struggle because something is blocking them
physically, mentally, or from the way they’ve been handled.

People aren’t much different.

If you want something to improve
whether it’s your horse, your business, your relationships sometimes it’s not about doing more.

It’s about being honest enough to remove what’s in the way.

Because real progress doesn’t come from forcing it.

It comes from creating the space for it to happen.

We have a small collection of dressage horses in the barn right now of all shapes and sizes. It definitely is fun to have some variety!
Tessa, Tom Petty and Teeny.
(I just realized they all start with the same letter as I typed that😂🤷🏻‍♀️)

Second ride, yes really.

You all won’t probably believe it from this video that Mare-Lyn hasn’t been getting ridden. Between life, a full training barn and some staffing changes, she’s actually had time off other than being brushed or blanketed and occasionally turned out to run around.

But this is exactly why I don’t rush timelines. Is this absolutely unheard of that a wild mustang who had her first ride probably about a month ago can be pulled out, saddled, hopped on and ridden out in the open thru obstacles? Am I crazy for trying it? Probably. She blows my mind. I am so grateful for her and her willingness and try. I feel like I’ve really never had to “teach” her anything. We just do it… and it works 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve been training horses to some extent for over 18 years, you think you would have seen it all in that amount of time. And then a horse like this comes along and just absolutely blows your mind.

We’ve had a busy last few weeks soaking up the sunshine! Preston got to learn about roping and had some loops thrown off him. The mini’s Mia and Tootsie finished up their training for showing in halter classes and learned about water crossing. Tuesday went on a 12.5 mile ride getting her ready for her owner to go play on the trails and work cows this summer!
Training spots are filling quickly for summer so if you are wanting to get your horse in let’s get you on the list!

Day 24
Mare-Lyn’s first saddle and first saddled ride and first trot.
I could have been doing this last week but I had a lot of things to get caught up on but figured today was the day!

Day 10!
And just like that we’re doing a little riding ❤️

Day 7!
This was not the plan today at all nor was it my plan to be on her back in 7 days. I’m just letting her show me what she’s ready for and it just keeps on progressing! She’s such a fun horse, you show her something once and she retains it and you never have to show her again.

I spend a lot of my days teaching horses not to react.

When something startles them, when pressure shows up, when the world feels big and confusing. I ask them to pause. To breathe. To think before they respond.

Funny thing is the horses seem to learn that lesson faster than I do sometimes.

Because if I’m honest, there are still days where emotions show up faster than patience does.
Where hurt or fear wants to react before I’ve really had time to understand what I’m feeling.

And the horses remind me that this isn’t something you master once.

Some days you do it well.

And some days you’re reminded you’re still learning too.
