🐾 International Tripawd Awareness Day

This day raises awareness about three-legged pets — and helps educate people about what life after amputation really looks like.

There are a lot of misconceptions about tripawd animals. But!!!

• Cats adapt incredibly well to life on three legs.
• Most return to normal activity after healing — running, climbing, and playing.
• Amputation is often the most humane and pain-relieving option after severe injury.
• Animals do not experience emotional loss the way humans do — they focus on healing and moving forward.

💙 Lenny’s Story 💙
Lenny was stepped on by a cow as a TINY one pound kitten, and her leg was fractured beyond repair. An emergency amputation followed …

Today? She’s happy, healthy, and SUPER fast. 🐾💨

Her surgery didn’t limit her — it freed her from pain.

International Tripawd Awareness Day reminds us that amputation is not the end of a life. It’s often the beginning of a comfortable, active, joyful one.

If you have a tripawd pet, share their photo below and help us educate others about how resilient these animals truly are.

And if you’d like to support emergency veterinary care that makes recoveries like Lenny’s possible:

Today is International Rescue Cat Day 🐾

We celebrate the brave, resilient, and lovable cats who have been rescued — from shelters, streets, and communities everywhere. Every rescued cat has a story: a second chance at life, love, and safety.

💙 Featured Cat: Penny 💙
Penny was an outdoor cat with very fine fur that became extremely matted — a condition that is painful and can cause serious health issues. Thanks to rescue, she is now an indoor kitty and thriving, happy, and completely pain-free! Peep the before and after! 🐾💛

We see it every day: cats who were abandoned, dumped, or overlooked finding care, spay/neuter, and safe spaces — sometimes forever homes, sometimes a safe return to their colony. Every rescued cat is a reminder that compassion works.

💙 Share your rescued cat story or photo in the comments! Let’s celebrate the cats who’ve touched our hearts and remind each other why rescue matters.

✂️ Today is World Spay Day —
And it matters more than most people realize.

Behind every spay surgery is a story that never had to happen.

It’s the litter born under a shed in freezing temperatures.
It’s the mama cat trying to survive while feeding six hungry mouths.
It’s the kitten and puppies dumped on a gravel road when they become “too many.”
It’s the cycle that repeats… and repeats… and repeats.

Spay and neuter doesn’t just prevent kittens.
It prevents suffering.
It prevents abandonment.
It prevents heartbreak — for the animals and for the people trying to help them.

This is why we trap.
This is why we fundraise.
This is why we show up.
This is why we return and rescue.

Because one surgery can change the entire future of a cat.

In Northwest Iowa, we are seeing what happens when prevention doesn’t happen. We see the dumped cats. The surprise litters. The overwhelmed caregivers.

We are choosing to do something about it.

💔 Featuring Baby Greg. Another sweet soul that didnt make it. 💔

Please consider donating to our project. Every dollar goes directly toward spay/neuter surgeries and the care of community cats and kittens. We can only continue this life-saving work with your support.

Northwest Iowa doesn’t have to be known for dumped animals.
It can be known for compassion, accountability, and real solutions. 🐾💙

This Week is National Justice for Animals Week.
(We could really use some justice 🤞🏻)

National Justice for Animals Week highlights the need for strong laws, meaningful enforcement, and proactive prevention to protect animals.

Here are the facts:

• Animal abandonment and dumping are criminal offenses in Iowa — yet rural dumping cases remain common and difficult to investigate and prosecute.
• The Animal Legal Defense Fund publishes annual rankings of state animal protection laws. In multiple past reports, Iowa has ranked in the lower half of U.S. states, with noted gaps in penalty structures, enforcement tools, and certain legal protections.
• An unspayed female cat can have 2–3 litters per year, averaging 4–6 kittens per litter. One unaltered pair and their offspring can result in hundreds of cats within just a few years.
• Nationwide, most cats entering shelters are never reclaimed by an owner.

When laws lack strength, enforcement resources, or preventive investment, communities feel the impact — and so do the animals.

Justice for animals means:

🐾 Strong, enforceable protections
🐾 Accountability for abandonment and cruelty
🐾 Public education
🐾 Accessible spay/neuter services
🐾 Community-based solutions like TNR

We focus on prevention — because reducing unwanted litters reduces abandonment, shelter intake, and long-term suffering at its source.

If you believe animals deserve stronger protections and proactive solutions, stand with us this week.

🐾 Today is International Cat Day 🐾

This day was chosen in honor of Socks, a former Presidents beloved cat, who passed away on February 20, 2009.

Today we celebrate the cats who rule our homes, our barns, our hearts — and yes, our community colonies too. 💙

Drop a photo of your cat (or community cat you care for!) in the comments — we’d love to see the faces that make your world brighter.

And if you’d like to honor your cat today, please consider donating to help us continue caring for community cats and kittens. (Pictured: Janice a sweet baby found with a bot fly in her neck!)

🚨🚨On Monday, February 2nd, a sweet cattle dog mix was dumped at an acreage just outside of Sioux Rapids. 😞

The homeowners reached out asking for help, and while we tried to figure something out, she had to spend that first night outside. She slept by their back door and cried because she wanted to come inside.

The next night I brought her food, scanned for a microchip, and ended up taking her with me because she is just so incredibly sweet. We thankfully found overnight placement, got her vaccinated right away, and she is now safe in rescue.

Here’s the hard part — she is clearly someone’s dog. She’s crate trained, knows tricks, is patient, healthy, and just wants to be close to people. She’s been sad and confused, and it absolutely breaks our hearts.

This is one of many dogs that get dumped, but this one feels especially hard because she is such a good dog. You couldn’t ask for a sweeter dog.

If anyone knows anything about her or might recognize her — her history, her age, where she came from, or what might have happened — please message us privately. We are not looking to press charges. We just want to understand her story so we can help her moving forward.

Please share. Let’s see if we can learn more about this girl.

❤️February 14 — Pet Theft Awareness Day ❤️

There’s no better day than Valentine’s Day to remind us how important it is to protect the pets we love so dearly.

Pet theft and animal dumping are very real issues in Northwest Iowa. Pets go missing far too often and are never found, and many cats we see in our communities are not truly “feral” — they are cats that were once owned, abandoned, or taken from one place and dumped somewhere else.

This is one of the many reasons TNR work matters. Spaying and neutering, microchipping, ID tags, and responsible pet ownership all help protect animals from being displaced, abandoned, or lost permanently. Community awareness and watching out for one another’s animals makes a difference, too.

We work to protect vulnerable cats and prevent suffering before it starts — because every cat deserves safety and stability. 🐾

✨ Please consider donating to our project! It all goes directly to the care of community cats and kittens. We can only continue to aid these cats and kittens with your support.

Something truly heartbreaking and disturbing has happened in our community involving multiple animals.

Out of respect for the investigation, I’m not able to share details right now. Law enforcement is aware and looking into the situation.

Please just hug your pets a little tighter tonight. I’ll share more when I’m able. We will need your help.💔

💙 Did you know February is filled with pet awareness months that all go hand-in-hand? 💙

At Little Sioux TNR, every one of these focuses on the same mission: healthier cats, fewer kittens born into hardship, and a community that chooses humane solutions.

February is recognized as:
🐾 Beat the Heat Month
🐾 Black Dog & Cat Syndrome Awareness Month
🐾 Feline Fix by Five Month
🐾 National Cat Health Month
🐾 National Prevent a Litter Month
🐾 Pet Dental Health Month
🐾 Responsible Pet Owners Month
🐾 Spay/Neuter Awareness Month (HSUS)

These aren’t separate ideas — they all work together.

👉 Spaying and neutering prevents litters before they start.
👉 Fewer kittens means fewer cats facing hunger, illness, and exposure.
👉 Healthier cats live longer, safer lives.
👉 Community cats and overlooked cats get a fair chance.
👉 Responsible action today prevents suffering tomorrow.

TNR isn’t just about fixing cats — it’s about breaking the cycle, protecting the cats already here, and creating a healthier future for our communities.

✨ Please consider donating to our project.
Every dollar goes directly toward the care of community cats and kittens. We can only continue this work — and grow it — with your support.
