There are ways that you, as the pet owner, can help with the grooming process - at home (or in the back yard, or at the park, etc)! Ways that are easy to teach and can make a world of difference at the groomer's.
This is the friendly and beautiful, Ember - out at Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. I came in to do her nails and help a couple other pups. When I took her out to the yards, we practiced "up." This is something I work with all the bigger dogs that come to my salon. Many of the big dogs I have come in and without any other prompt from me will get "up" on the table! I don't have to drag, lift, or force them onto the table. It's a HUGE help for both of us.
How do you teach this? Get their attention, pat the surface and say "up" Lure them with a treat or their favorite toy. MAKE IT FUN. It's not a big deal if they don't get on today, it's a work in progress. Just get them working on getting comfortable with hopping up. Maybe lift their front paws on and praise them. Praise any foot they put on the surface, maybe they put their head on the surface, or show interest in jumping up on the table/platform/bench/etc. Praise, praise, praise!
Ember has got "up," DOWN! 🙃
If you are looking for a friendly, energetic, sweet, cuddley soul, Ember is for you! She is confident, but not confrontational. She has a playful and youthful attitude.
