May is all about the pets!

As part of National Pet Week, it is important to know that nutrition and exercise matters. An estimated 52.7% of dogs and 57.9% cats in the United States are overweight or obese. Keeping your pet at a healthy weight lowers their risk of certain health problems like arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems, back problems, kidney disease, and some forms of cancer. It also can reduce your pet’s risk of joint injuries associated with excess weight. And if your pet has arthritis, maintaining a healthy weight can make it easier to manage any associated pain or discomfort.

How do I know if my pet’s weight is healthy?
Have an honest conversation with your veterinarian about your pet’s weight. Your veterinarian can check your pet’s weight and overall health, and make recommendations specially tailored to your pet’s needs, including nutrition and exercise. But a healthy weight isn’t simply a number on a scale. Your veterinarian can also teach you to assess your pet’s body condition by looking at their body shape and feeling certain parts of their body.

BEFORE and AFTER

Cooper came into us a couple months ago because his owners thought he had a "little" cut on his chest. After an examination, it was revealed to us cooper had a very large puncture wound that went from his neck all the way back to mid chest. It is still a mystery what happened to Cooper and what he got into, but with some surgeries and some TLC he was good as new! Be more careful out there Cooper .😉

We had the priviledge of hosting Emily at Central Vet the past couple of weeks. Emily is a 5th year vet student all the way from Queensland, Australia. During her time here she followed ( or should we say put up with) 😉 our vets around during their day to day work. Including pregnancy checks at dairy's, embryo work, feedlot calls, and surgeries. During some down time she also was able to follow around our companion animal Dr's as well. We hope we were able to teach her a thing or two during her time here and show her the wonderful/or different things Northwest Iowa has to offer. Maybe we'll see her back in the area in the future! We wish you the best of luck Emily as you finish out your studies, and safe travels back home!

Heartworm disease is a silent threat, but can be preventable. A single heart worm bite can begin the Heartworm lifecycle, which develops silently before reaching the heart and lungs. This month, let’s get ahead of the cycle with a simple test and a consistent prevention plan.
