β¨ Mochlus (Riopa) fernandi β Fire Skink β¨
π Description
The Mochlus fernandi, more commonly known as the Fire Skink, is a striking and robust terrestrial lizard celebrated for its vivid coloration and secretive nature. Its name comes from the dazzling flame-like pattern along its body β bright red and orange sides contrasting with a glossy black and golden back.
ποΈ Habitat
In the wild, the Fire Skink thrives in the leaf litter and undergrowth of tropical rainforests, where it spends much of its time burrowing or hiding beneath logs and moss. It prefers moist, shaded environments with plenty of cover.
π§ Environmental Parameters
To keep your Fire Skink healthy and vibrant, maintain the following conditions:
π‘οΈ Temperature: 26β30Β°C (78β86Β°F) ambient; 32β35Β°C (90β95Β°F) at the basking spot
π Night Temperature: 22β24Β°C (72β75Β°F)
π§ Humidity: 60β80%, achieved through regular misting and a deep, moisture-retaining substrate
π Lighting: Full-spectrum UVB lighting is recommended to support calcium metabolism and natural behavior, even for a mostly terrestrial species
π₯© Feeding
A carnivorous insectivore, Mochlus fernandi enjoys a varied diet of crickets, mealworms, roaches, silkworms, and the occasional waxworm as a treat. Dust live prey with calcium and vitamin supplements to ensure strong bones and vivid coloration.
π‘ Terrarium Setup
Provide a horizontal enclosure with ample space for digging and exploring (minimum 90 Γ 45 Γ 45 cm for an adult). A deep, moist substrate such as a mix of coconut fiber, topsoil, and leaf litter allows for natural burrowing behavior. Add secure hiding places, branches, and rocks for enrichment. A shallow water dish should always be available for hydration and humidity stability.
β‘ Behavior & Temperament
The Fire Skink is active, alert, and incredibly fast, often darting between hides when disturbed. While not a βhands-onβ reptile, with gentle care and patience, it can become accustomed to its keeperβs presence and may even accept food from tongs.
