Let's Talk... Recall (Natural & UnCommanded)
I look at Recall in 2 different ways and I train them for different results. There is the "Recall" command and there is a natural Recall that all dogs have.
In this video we are seeing an uncommanded Recall. When talking about the topic, its often not discussed or even addressed that most of our dogs know exactly how to recall before we ever even tell them. Often times in dog training there is a habit to complicate the ideas we want our dogs to execute because we don't not consider the dogs natural skills.
So the questions are, what does natural recall even look like? How do I utilize that to actually get my dog to recall? How does natural recall play into teaching my dog to recall on command?
1. We begin by building our relationship with our pups on a daily basis. Spend time together so they natually want to be around you more often. This begins in the house, with playtime, feeding (by hand or by games), leashed walks, etc. The gial is to create a strong bond that qllows your dog to understand you are the biggest reward.
Begin building a relationship with your dogs using the same principle as when you're looking at commanded recall:
•I will not call you unless I absolutely need you
*If I need you, I will go to you before calling out for you.
2. The distance your dog is able to Recall from and be allowed to explore should be directly reflected in how responsible they are.
Start short then work your way up. Begin with a short leash and 'stops' while out on a walk. Teach them, when you stop and they return to you, the walk can continue. You are saying nothing and doing nothing when you stop. At first, you can encourage their return by taking a few steps backwards. This part will require the most patience because you're waiting to see your dogs natural response. Once they return, you mark (good) and reward.
Then you move to a longer leash and repeat. Then you can begin to release the leash, stop, and wait for them to come back. Eventually moving to off leash Recall when you see they are responsible enough to progress
