Dogs are always learning even when you're not intentionally teaching them anything.

It is important for our dog to not only learn and bond with us, but also other dogs and animals. They need someone that also speaks their language. That is why some dogs can have socializing issues. They forgot how to speak dog and be an animal without constant human supervision and intervention.

Betty is learning how to not only be with us, but also the other dogs and cats in the household. This is just as important as us teaching her how to behave, except these animals are speaking her native language. She's learning what's right and wrong, how to play properly, learning to gauge the other animals resposes. They correct her when necessary, and she gets it. She doesn't over react. She simply doesn't keep doing it because they said it's enough.

Every morning after Betty has eaten and been outside again to potty, she comes in and has "free time" with her seven year old grand sire, Obi. Obi is very appropriate with her. He plays and let's her be a puppy, but he corrects when necessary without over correcting. That's very important, especially with Terrors -- I mean Terriers. He engages her in play, rolls around with her, let's her jump up and run around, but when she's gotten over stimulated and her crazy comes out, he politely tells her to tone it down to a tolerable level.

Betty is also learning that being free in the house doesn't mean it's a free for all. There are still rules and boundaries. This is where having a solid dog like Obi comes in to teach her. She mimicks his behavoirs. He decides he's done playing with her, so chews a bone. She follows. Very important. She's learning to make smart and appropriate decisions on her own. Do I still need to point her in the right direction sometimes? Of course, she's a puppy. Above all, it is important that she's set up for success to make smart decisions on her own.

This past weekend, we ventured to our first dog show in nearly 2 years! This was Effie's first time in the ring, and she did fantastic. We still have a lot to learn, but overall it was a wonderful experience for her. He earned a couple Best Females and a Best of Winners!

Obi and I made our Rally debut -- finally! We scored 91, 91, and a 90 in each trial, earning 2 First Places and a Second in Rally 1 and brining home our URO1 title!

Obi and Dez worked their butts off in weight pull on the toughest track we've encountered yet! It was a natural surface with a slight incline and proved very difficult for even the most experienced pulling dogs. Obi was pretty cooked mentally after doing Rally as well, but he pulled 245 lbs (10.2%) on Saturday and 335 lbs (13.9%) Sunday, winning First Place in the 30 lbs B class both days. I'm thinking Obi may be retiring from pulling soon and we'll be focusing our efforts on Rally Obedience.

Dez was outstanding in weight pull! At 8 years old, this girl seems to love it more every time we go out! She is always ready to work and dig in. Weighing in at 13 lbs, Dez pulled 200 lbs (15.3%) in 7.5 seconds on Saturday winning First Place in her 20 lbs A class. Sunday she went in much more confident, pulling 245 lbs (18.8%) in 9.04 seconds not only winning First Place but also a Most Weight Pulled Veteran in Division A, as well as her UWP title and gaining 25 points to her UWPCH!

I'm so proud of the Black Label K9s -- Thank you to the clubs for running a smooth and safe show for everyone!

There is a story they tell of two dogs. Both at separate times walk in the same room. One comes out wagging his tail while the other comes out growling. A woman watching this goes into the room to see what could possibly make one dog so happy and the other so mad. To her surprise she finds a room filled with mirrors. The happy dog found a thousand happy dogs looking back at him, while the angry dog saw only angry dogs growling back at him.

What you see in the world around you is a reflection of who you are.

I realize that most people don’t understand my love for dogs; and I thank the people who sincerely do. It’s an acquired love that like most appreciated adoration grows stronger and fonder with age and experience.

My dogs are some of the best beings I have ever met.

Bug says, "Smells tasty. What's for breakfast?"

Today's menu included: fresh, young chicken gizzards and fresh salmon with a slight blend of the Honest Kitchen's Embark. As always, there is added diatomaceous earth (natural de-wormer), digestive enzymes/probiotics and organic kelp for a natural source of necessary vitamins and minerals! The kibble is for an older Lab I am fostering. He gets Orijen's adult formula with the same supplements mixed in. Mmmn: eat up, kids. :)

***Note: I do NOT mix kibble and raw in the same meal; nor do I recommend it as both are digested entirely different.
