A picture from today's session with John and his pup, Mable! Mable is full of energy and has a hard time focusing for longer than a second. We worked more on walking beside John, rewarding her anytime she chose to walk with him and captured any moments of focus she'd give him. We'll grow this more in their next session! Great job guys!

A couple of pictures from our session with Mike and his pup, Ruby this morning! They learned another loose leash walking game to help Ruby focus and keep her leash loose. They also learned a game that helps get Ruby's focus, outside, and around doors. This way she isn't bolting out the door as soon as it's open and isn't dragging him to his truck or into the building at the end or beginning of lessons. They both did great!

Debbie and Grimsby playing a game that builds more focus, attention, and loose leash skills! Grimsby is learning to stay focused on Debbie until she gives him permission to go get the treat out of the bowl. They did great!

The sound you hear is called a clicker, which marks the moment Grimsby does something Debbie likes and promises a reward is coming.

I've had a lot of sessions this week, but I was only able to get video of Wendy and Sky! I'll try to be better set up next week so I can share more.

Wendy and Sky played our All Eyes On Me game, working on better focus and walking skills. Sky does such a wonderful job of matching Wendy's pace!

Sky tends to lose focus when taken to new places, so we are teaching her the foundational skills she needs where she can learn them, before taking her out where it will be more challenging.

We wouldn't take a child to Disney land and try to teach them math, however, after the child knows math, they would easily be able to solve the problem in that environment.

It's the same with our dogs.

For anyone interested and wanting to follow along, I am sharing our dog, Hershey's, reactivity training journey on our YouTube channel. Hershey is very worried about and uncomfortable around people, due to some bad experiences he's had in the past. He's also very sound sensitive. Noise worries him. I have worked with him on this a lot in the past, and did see some improvement, but life got in the way. So we are basically starting over with him. Follow his journey here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYBDvCbV6pr0Swd31vrVs7aTKiYx2z2fU - Be sure to read the description in his playlist if you want to learn more about him, his story, and what we're working on.

Dog training tip:
If you're using the leash to try an hold your dog in position by your side, you are using it incorrectly.

Leashes are only there for your dog's safety. You need to TRAIN your dog where you want them to be.

Walking on a loose leash should not take any strength on your part.

Training your dog to walk on a loose leash, does not start on a walk! You can start right inside your home, or in your own yard.

If you're constantly struggling and frustrated with your dog pulling on every walk, please reach out! We'll teach you fun games you can play at home that will help teach your dog HOW to walk on a loose leash.

Here's another game I had Bessie play with their dog Moose. Here we are just looking for him to look at Bessie. Doesn't matter where he is.

We're using a clicker to mark when he's looking at Bessie, then he gets rewarded. This is a great game for building focus and the love of being close! It helps build on and off leash skills.

Bessie also shared a wonderful win today! Moose seen a cat the other day and decided not to chase! Wasn't bothered at all! Way to go!

Bessie brought their dog, Moose, in for a session this evening! Here's a little of one of the games we were playing.

Working on his attention on her while going through doors and going between the building and the car. This is the area dogs are most likely to pull because they want to get to the car or get to the building!

The only things we are looking for, is his focus on her. We can work on where he positions himself later, and you can see, just by adjusting where he is being rewarded, decides where he's going to be. If he leaves her and pulls ahead, they go nowhere.... or back to the start to try again.

Tara brought her dog, Chaz, in for a session this week. We worked on building more focus on her and his love of staying close!

He's a hound dog, so he has an independent mind and loves to follow his nose! Working on his focus, proximity, and disengagement skills are important!

They played some fun games that they both enjoyed and helped him learn some great life skills!

We had several lessons this week with others too, I just forget to take pictures and videos sometimes!

Wendy brought her dog, Sky, in for a refresher! When Sky was still a puppy, they came in for quite a few sessions. It was great seeing them again! Sky, now 4 years old, was pulling on the leash and lost some of her self-control skills when excited. Today we played some games to help Sky remember how to walk on a loose leash. She picked it up quickly and was even able to walk on a loose leash back to the car. We'll strengthen this more, along with her self-control skills in their next lesson.
