Debbie and Grimsby back for another lesson!

Today we worked on;

🐶 Grimsby coming back to Debbie to have his harness grabbed.

🐶 Grimsby coming running back to Debbie when he's called and allowing her to grab onto his harness.

🐶 Building more motivation for playing with a toy since Grimsby is not super toy motivated.

🐶 Building value for Grimsby's nose coming up off of the floor or ground so he can disengage from scents easier when out walking.

🐶 Building more focus and loose leash walking skills

🐶 Growing more focus and calmness when walking through doorways instead of it being an excited dash out the door.

Do you have a dog or puppy you would like help training? We'd love to hear from you!

Debbie and Grimsby came in for a lesson on Thursday, here's what we worked on;

1. Coming when called and checking in / moving towards Debbie after checking something out on the ground. This is a great default game to play to always be building up the skill of coming back.

2. Getting Grimsby to target Debbie's hand with his nose, trying to get more enthusiasm from Grimsby for these. Hand targets are wonderful for getting your dog's focus, getting them in different positions, teaching different cues, and getting them in close to you.

3. Harness touches and harness grabs, just like the collar grab game, this is an important skill for coming back when called, emergency situations, and for other games we'll play.

4. Building toy motivation during balance breaks.

5. Loose leash walking when heading towards the truck. Grimsby struggles a lot with this one and it's a challenge for him for sure. I've included audio on this part so you can listen in to what's really going on.

Great job Debbie & Grimsby!

There is a lot you can accomplish in a 1 minute session with your dog! 🐕

✅️ Pick 1 thing to work on or 1 training game to play.

✅️ Get 5 treats ready and do 5 repetitions of whatever you chose.

✅️ Have a short play session with their favorite toy.

✅️ Get 5 more treats ready and do 5 more repetitions.

✅️ End your session with more playing with their favorite toy!

If your dog has a hard time settling after a training session, have a stuffed kong or something for them to chew on ready and give that to them when you're done.

If you choose to give this a try with your dog, let us know how it went in the comments below!

Happy training! 🐾

Adali, Jose, and Balto back for lesson #4 yesterday!

We worked on teaching Balto;
1. How to loosen the leash when he feels it go tight.
2. How to go to and stay on the boundary until released.
3. Not to jump on someone when they are sitting down trying to eat, even if they are down low at his level.
4. More collar grabs for later when we work on him coming when called and other things we'll use it for.
5. To sit instead of jumping and biting for the tug toy.

They all did great!

Adali, Jose, and Balto, back for lesson #3!

Today we worked on getting Balto happy and confident about his collar being grabbed. Why do we want to do this?

1. It will help get him to come ALL the way back when they call him.
2. If there's ever an emergency situation where his collar has to be grabbed, he'll be a-okay with it.
3. If he ever gets loose and someone else needs to grab his collar, he's more likely to be okay with that too.

We also introduced him to a blanket as a boundary. Boundaries are wonderful in so many ways.

They give your dog a place to hang out and chill.

They give your dog a place to be, so while you're handling food in the kitchen, they can be in their boundary out of the kitchen. They'll be out of the way and not putting their paws up on the counters or stealing food.

You can use them while you're eating too so your dog isn't begging for food.

Or even when visitors come over so your dog isn't jumping all over them and being overly excited.

You'll see Balto learn to seek out the blanket and how to use his brain to figure out what we want. As we go, he'll learn to stay on the boundary and to wait for a release cue to get off.

We also started building value for being at their side. You'll see, right now, we're at the very beginning stages and Balto is pretty sure the value is elsewhere. As we go, you'll see him get better and better so keep an eye out!

Great job guys!

Welcome Adali and Balto! They have just started their training journey here with us today! We introduced Balto to the boundary, following a food lure, and creating a positive association with his collar being held onto. We also played with some fun toys! Adali has already done a wonderful job of teaching his sit and down so we'll be able to strengthen them even more right away. Great job Adali and Balto!

Dan brought Blue back in for another lesson today where we worked more on his leash walking skills. For this game, we played off leash, looking for those moments where he was in the right position, finding the right position, disengaging from distractions, and coming back when called. Great job Dan and Blue!

Training is not a direct path from A to Z. It's more like a giant jigsaw puzzle! As you put the pieces together, you start seeing the bigger picture.

My first try at making some gourmet dog biscuits! Definitely a learning curve with the dog safe 'frosting'! Tried to make them fall / Thanksgiving colors. Puppy class students tonight will be the first that gets to try them! .... Of course, Hershey and Blackjack got to try a bit of them too. They say they are doggy approved.
