Yesterday was every horse owners worst fear and as a breeder, the worst fear. Its hard to write this post because no breeder wants to share the ugly side of owning horses but in all reality, this is real life and these are the real things that go on behind the scenes.
The truth is, breeding and raising horses is beautiful and rewarding but it also is ugly, painful and absolutely gutwrenching and yesterday was just that. Vegas coliced last night and we rushed her to the vet and they worked hard on until the early hours of the morning but the damage was too far gone and we made the heartbreaking decision to put her down. Vegas was a mare to build a program around and was a beautiful gentle mare that we had big plans for. Her 2 week c**t is also heartbroken without his mom but has figured out the bucket and will be ok. We unfortunately arent new to an orphan foal and Spaghetti will get round the clock feeds and have everyone wrapped around him.
I would much rather post cute baby pictures but this is the raw and real side of breeding. We send countless hours working with the horse, lose more hours of sleep worrying about them and cry more tears than I ever thought a person could shed into these horses and these kind of losses never go away but life still moves forward and the work never ends. We are grateful to have healthy babies on the ground but this one stings.
So, Rest easy Vegas you deserve it.
