One way to overcome weather adversity is to grow in greenhouses and shade house. I also use Earthbox (R) pots to extend the growing season and give plants the water they need to survive hot summers. Know what your soil & water pH are? Plants can't take up nutrients if its two low or two high on the pH scale. I use a battery powered pH tester from Palo Cedro Garden Supply. The water in the east foothills is very alkaline, the farm water is 8.0 out of the tap! I use Earth Juice Citric Acid crystals to bring it down to between 6.0 & 6.5. I use pH balanced Sunshine Mix without any NPK products, I want to control what my plants eat!
