✨💕Meet this weeks adoptable pups!💕✨

This will be our last adoption event before Christmas and we’d love forever to start Saturday, not as this year’s Christmas gift, but as new best friends, as the start of forever for each of these dogs.

Our adoption Saturday event will be at the rescue from 11-1PM. Please bring your resident dogs and humans for meets.

We also have some dogs available for private meets - this will be noted in their bios.

If interested in any of these pups, please check out their bios and apply at foothilldogrescue.org

To date, we’ve brought in over 115 puppies in 2025!

Each and every puppy in our care receives: vaccines (DHPP, Rabies), kennel cough, microchip/lifetime registration, and worming, costing roughly $71 per pup, and that’s before spay/neuter and all the other essentials they need.

From food to pads (LOTS of pads!), toys, and enrichment, caring for these tiny nuggets adds up fast, and this year has been full of unexpected surprises. Did someone say “12 Days of Christmas”? Because that’s exactly what it’s felt like with all the puppies we’ve helped!

We also have had quite a few bottle pups this year who require formula, extra warm heating pads, and extra special soft hands to grow in!

Some of our extra special stories of 2025:
🐾 Mama A/Butternut and Ellie Walker, two little surprises who didn’t even know they were pregnant, now thriving with their pups!

🐾 Wendelin, who needed external fixator surgery at a young age. Thanks to donors, she received the specialized care and support she needed to grow strong, healthy, and ready to take on the world. You can see her pictured below living her best life in her foster home, before being adopted.

Thanks to Puppy Island, all of these mamas and pups had everything they needed to thrive, and their adopters are set up for success with supplies, guidance, and support as well!

Donations make all this possible, from vaccines and microchips to spay/neuter surgeries, specialized medical care like Wendelin, and essential supplies. Every gift helps us save more tiny nuggets like these and give them the healthy start they deserve!

Think Batman and Robin, or PB and J, or even coffee and sunny mornings. Well, Ann and Mike Kempf are Foothill Dog Rescue’s very own iconic duo.

This duo has been opening their hearts and homes to Foothill dogs since 2017. Living in the heart of the Foothills, they share their home with four resident dogs and cats, and love being outdoors.

Ann and Mike’s journey with Foothill began when some friends who fostered dogs kept trying to recruit them by introducing them to different foster pups. They jokingly say, “We weren’t sure if we’d be able to give up our fosters and be the next case on Hoarders. But eventually we decided to try and have been going ever since.”

Stout was their first official foster, and since then, time and time again, they have opened their hearts and homes. Ann and Mike both try their very best to “never say no,” and that makes it possible for us to say yes to so many dogs and pups in need!

Not only do they foster dogs and pups, but they also foster kittens for a local organization. If you ask them, they may even say they have become at times “the special house.” By this, they mean they have taken in pups with parvo, neurological cases, and other extraordinary challenges, like amputations and more.

Ann has also generously helped with community vaccine clinics, transport, and picking up supplies, including entire pallets of food, and so much more, showing her dedication goes far beyond fostering.

Ann and Mike reflect, “When we got our first special case, we wondered why, with so many healthy dogs, we were trying to save someone who was ‘different.’ But once we got to know them, our answer was quickly given. These dogs and cats have taught us and reminded us that just because they were different, challenged, and special, they were valued! They were worthy of love and that we needed to see their heart, not their challenge.” The Kempf household has become a soft place to land for so many amazing dogs.

After being involved for eight years, some dogs inevitably leave a permanent paw print on their hearts. Summing up these special ones in a few words isn’t easy, but Ann and Mike did a wonderful job. First up, they shared: “Rocker was a tripod with an amazing zest for life. Don’t ask him to go slow—he was a zoomer! We knew his potential adopters were his person when we saw them walk together. They were totally in sync, and they’re living the dream in Tahoe.”

Next, they remembered, “Our second rescue that really made an impression was Marv. He was adopted out by another rescue and was then diagnosed with distemper, losing both his hearing and sight. But don’t tell him, he had no idea. Try yelling for a deaf dog… it doesn’t work. But again, Marv taught us to be open to all things. He was an amazing little dude with so many lessons to teach and so much love to give. He was adopted by an amazing couple with a golden retriever who became his seeing-eye dog. Now that’s pretty cool.”

Both Rocker and Marv, along with all the other rescue dogs that have come through the Kempfs’ home, show gratitude by loving “with their whole hearts,” and in return, they receive the same from Ann and Mike.

Rescue isn’t easy, and the Kempfs are honest about it. When asked how they handle the emotional side, they said, “There are times that we get really frustrated… why these amazing dogs are even in these situations.” While fostering can feel like “a bandaid to a much larger problem,” they focus on what they can do: “Opening our home and hearts is what we CAN do.” After each adoption, there’s a period of grieving,” we come home to a quiet house”but knowing their foster is safe and loved in an adoptive home makes it worth it. And as they say, “there’s always another pup waiting to fill that spot.”

Their passion continues because the need never stops. “Please, put us out of business!” they shared. Empty shelters, full homes, and full hearts, that’s the dream.

With a supportive husband (thanks, Mike!), an incredibly patient pack of dogs who mentor newcomers, dog-savvy cats, and a willingness to wake up at 2:00 a.m. for feedings, it truly takes a village. And every member of the Kempf household shows up, time and time again.

Thank you, Ann & Mike, for being such an incredible part of the Foothill family. Because of you, so many dogs, especially the extra-special ones, have known nothing but love, safety, and second chances. We are so grateful for you today, and every day! ❤️🐾

Max, our newest Paws on the Block pup, wanted to give you all a little more insight into the program and what goes on behind the scenes. ❤️🐾💚

If you aren’t aware, Paws on the Block is more than just a rescue program. It’s a life changing partnership between Foothill Dog Rescue and Folsom State Prison, pairing rescue dogs with incarcerated individuals who pour their hearts into training, socializing, and loving these pups every single day. It’s a program full of second chances, hope, and transformation!

Here’s how it works:
🐾 Every dog goes through a structured evaluation at the shelter done by the POB coordinators taking into account feedback from shelter staff and volunteers.
🐾 We also consider any general feedback, and what disposition the handlers feel would be the best fit for the current group, making sure any new pup can be safely and smoothly immersed into the existing pack and routine inside the institution

🐾 If they pass, they join the program and enter the institution for a minimum of four weeks!

🐾 During that time, they live 24/7 with their amazing handlers and are trained by them, while also getting tons of affection from the rest of the institution, other incarcerated individuals, CDCR staff, and more.
🐾Their length of stay varies depending on how they are doing with the training, extra support they may need with quirks etc!

🐾 Once they’re ready, they’re posted as available, private meets are held, and then they’re adopted into loving homes!
🐾 Then a spot is open, and the process repeats for a new pup to join the program!

Because each dog’s timeline is different, the cost to the rescue varies too. On average, it costs us at least $300 per dog for food, treats, toys, flea & tick prevention, training supplies, and more, and with our adoption fees being $300 for adult dogs, sometimes we don’t even break even. We also want to make sure adopters are set up for success with the things they need, whether that’s treats, crates, enrichment, or other essentials.

Our goal with the program is to make sure we can sustain it longterm and continue putting 100% into every pup who enters Paws on the Block, and give them everything they need to flourish. To make second chances possible. Your support helps ensure we can keep giving them everything they need to thrive.

That’s why your donations to our Copper Matching Challenge make such a huge difference.
Every dollar is matched, and the matching opportunity runs through December 31st. Your support truly helps us continue providing POB dogs with the care, supplies, and set-ups they need to thrive both in the program and in their new homes.

Fun fact: Max’s name at the shelter was Copper, perfectly fitting that he gets to help highlight this matching fundraiser! ❤️🐾 💚

🚨New addition to the adoption floor for our Saturday Adoption event at the rescue!🚨

Meet Boogie
Neutered Male Border Collie/mix
Approx. 7 mos. old
Approx. 37 lbs.
Working on Housetraining
Crate Trained: Yes
Dogs: Yes
Kids: Yes
Cats: Unknown

Boogie is a sweet young male who appears to be willing to learn, so will need someone dedicated to continue training. He pulls on the leash while on walks, but does enjoy a long walk. He is still working on his house training skills too.
He loves dogs and people and been good around kids, but has not met any cats. He has adjusted well to being crated while we are out and at night. This sweet boy is high energy so he enjoys playing fetch, playing with toys, going on walks and chewing on bones to keep him occupied. He also enjoys car rides and snuggling with his people.
Boogie will be a great addition to any family if they can keep up with his energy.
If interested, we recommend submitting an adoption application at: www.foothilldogrescue.org

This dog will be available at Saturday’s adoption event at our rescue. Meet and greets are 11:00 - 1:00.
Our address is:
4131 S Shingle Rd suite 14
