From the State Veterinarians Office:

Livestock Show Information-
We have been notified of a number of show pigs from multiple locations in the state that have developed gastrointestinal issues in the past 7-10 days. The symptoms are diarrhea, some vomiting, listlessness, and off feed. It appears that the condition is contagious. We have not heard of any deaths associated with the condition in show pigs but some of these types diseases can cause high death rates in younger pigs if they are exposed. We are working to get diagnostics done today but regardless of what we find out, this is a serious disease that appears to spread easily and quickly when pigs are commingled.

With County Shows and OYE being scheduled in the next 2-4 weeks it’s very important that we control this now! Please alert everyone you know who deals with show pigs about this. It’s incredibly important for exhibitors, parents, Ag Educators, and Extension Educators to act responsibly and not take pigs that are sick or have been in association with sick swine to shows for at least 10 days after the illness has subsided. Educate yourselves and others about good biosecurity and how to maintain it.

Keep pigs that have commingled with other pigs away from sows and other pigs at home. Take care of show pigs and sick or exposed pigs last and change clothes and boots before going back to sows and other pigs. A good short biosecurity handout is attached to this email.

Hopefully exhibitors and their supporters will voluntarily take actions to stop this disease. If not it may be necessary to take regulatory action in an attempt to stop the spread.

Thanks, and again, please help us educate all people involved in the swine exhibition world.

From our state vet:

Currently Washington County is the only affected County but we are investigating very suspicious cases in other counties.

I also want to let you know that intrastate (county to county movement) movement of livestock to events, private treaty sales, or any commingling of livestock from a County with cases of VSV are required to follow the same rules as our import requirements. They are : Livestock or horses traveling from a County that has had VSV diagnosed within the past 30 days (30) days or a county that contains a premises quarantined for VSV shall be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection dated within five (5) days of entry containing the following statement: "All animals identified on this certificate of veterinary inspection have been examined and found to be free from signs of vesicular stomatitis and have not originated from a premise which is under quarantine for vesicular stomatitis."
